If you saw one trailer for this movie, you would know that Cumberbatch was the bad guy. That wasn't the surprise.

"BAD GUY HERE" is what they were going for. You were supposed to know he was bad, just not who he was. Spock screaming "KHAN" definitely wasn't as awkward as it could have been.
I do think the Kirk/Spock emotion moments were a little over done though. They haven't been through THAT much together yet, and most of the time they didn't even like each other.

I thought the cheesy factor of the "Khan" fit in well with Shatners version. Shatner did it out of frustration of Khan marooning him inside of the "dead" planet...yet Kirk knew that he would be getting off of that planet in a matter of hours.
As far as Spock getting emotional, it is hard to deal with, but I think this group is playing with the more human side than the Vulcan side. In the original series, Spock never lost his home planet or his mother in one horrific event, and he never had to deal with the death of Kirk. Having never been a Vulcan, I can't speak to the difficulty of burying my emotions, but perhaps Spock is still young and learning to deal with hiding those emotions; emotions he never had to fight back in the original show/movies.
