Data Won't Return for "Star Trek XI"?
by Binh Ngo | September 11, 2006
Discuss Article
Unless huge sums of money or time travel is involved, it looks very unlikely that Brent Spiner, aka Data in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" series, will reprise his role for the eleventh theatrical installment of "Star Trek." Comingsoon.net spoke with BANG Showbiz's senior editor Simon Thompson who said Spiner told him that he's "too old" to play Data and that the make-up on him would "look stupid" at his age.

"Star Trek XI" will be produced (and possibly direct) by J.J. Abrams ("Alias," "Lost") and is rumored to be about James T. Kirk early days at Starfleet Academy, a rumor Abrams delined. Matt Damon has been rumored to be in consideration to play Kirk. Paramount is shooting for a 2008 release.

I think the only reason Spiner said that is because he knows that Star Trek XI isn't going to feature the Next Generation crew, so he has nothing to lose by sounding noble.

What would be the purpose of Data returning if this was a prequel to Kirk? Which gives me hope that this next film isn't going to be a prequel, and I sincerely hope it won't because prequels don't turn out well, unless your going to introduce totally new characters and not try to redo Kirk. But of course that is what Enterprise tried to do and that didn't turn out well, you'd think they would learn from that and just try to pick up where the films left off and make it better.

Brent Spiner won't be in the next Star Trek movie because he's not going to be offered a role.

What's "Star Trek"?
Didn't it die long ago? Let it rest in peace while we still have some fond memories of it.

I for one would like to see a better end for the TNG movie than Nemesis

I'm confused.
If it is a prequel, then why would Data even be in it.

But, if it wasn't a prequel, then why would Data even be in it -- he died in the last one.

A half decent Star Trek movie can still rake in 300 million world-wide.

They just need a re-boot, like Bond did with Brosnan.

Agreed. It certainly didn't hurt Batman.

I rewatched Nemesis a few days ago. It's a decent entry (beats the hell out of Insurection or Generations), but I'd like to see more of a conclusion to the TNG too. The ending of Nemesis certainly left the door open. On the other hand, I'm all for a reboot as well.

after a certain age
It is kind of hard to look good in those form fitting star trek uniforms. May be Brett Spinner do not want to get in to a diet to squeeze himself into those treky uniforms.

Spiner should fire his agent, because his post-Trek roles have been spotty at best (no pun intended). His best was in Introducing Dorothy Dandridge, but nowadays he's in paycheck fare like Material Girls. Waste of a great talent.

Maybe he should go the Mark Hamill route and do toon voices (preferably in a Next Generation animated series)...
