Silent Bob Talks about Matt Damon & "Star Trek"
by Scott Weinberg | June 29, 2006
Discuss Article
Not long ago we shared a widely-reported piece of gossip indicating that new "Star Trek" producer J.J. Abrams wanted to cast Matt Damon in the role of Captain Kirk. Turns out Damon's old buddy Kevin Smith is as skeptical as I am...

From IGN FilmForce: "The Boston Herald chatted with "Clerks II" director Kevin Smith about his new film, his pal Ben Affleck's directing debut "Gone, Baby, Gone," as well as the rumor that Smith's "Dogma" co-star Matt Damon may be in the running to play the young Captain Kirk in Paramount's new "Star Trek" movie.

"I wonder if Matt would even do it," Smith told the Herald. "He's usually not that interested in treading where others have trod. He likes to break new ground."

The Boston Herald smartly points out that, if that's the case, then why is Damon set to appear in sequels such as "Ocean's 13" and "The Bourne Ultimatum"?

Smith went on to suggest that, "if they wind up casting Matt as Kirk, they should cast Ben as Spock. It seems like a no-brainer!"

oh, that would just be wrong.

let's see, forever be immortalized as the (lesser)rat pack with hollywood heavyweights(clooney, pitt) and legends(gould, Reiner) and have your marquee franchise role like cruise (M:I) and willis(Die Hard).
please!

if he does kirk,it would be for fun. if he's a fan, he'd do it. if not, then they will give it to someone else.
this 'rumor' isn't particulary interesting. it's the star trek franchise, not a blockbuster.

so why does 2/3rds of the world not accept jesus? are they going to hell, why is conversion the way to heaven, where is buddhism wrong? Where is Islam wrong? where are Hinduism and Taoism and Judaism wrong? Religions are just different ways of describing the same paradoxical idea. The idea of a God, who exists, but nowhere we can see a God who allows bad things to happen, it's a way of rationalizing the pain we feel and the pain we cause ourselves, it's necessary. but proscelitizing, alienates more than it helps. and on a Rotten Tomatoes Message Board it really has no place. So in summary: The last thing the world needs is a God that needs everyone to be on his side, and really the last thing the world needs is a God that takes away personal responsibility.

PS Damon Won't do it. Oh well.

Boston Herald not that smart
How does the Bourne series qualify as Matt Damon working on someone elses role? He was the original Jason Bourne, so his doing the sequel is not going against Kevin Smith's statement that Matt Damon doesnt like to do other peoples roles. Even the Oceans franchise...it has been decades since that was done...this generation of movie goers doesnt even know the existence of the original, and even if they do, they havent seen it.

In any case, the Spiderman role would have been perfect for Matt Damon.
