Matt Damon Sets the Star Trek Record Straight
Guess that means no Affleck as Spock...
by Scott Weinberg | July 23, 2007
Discuss Article
For months we've heard some sort of rumor connecting Matt Damon to J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek film. And now the actor has come out and offered the final word.

"Complete internet rumor," is basically what Mr. Damon told IGN Movies while spending time on the Bourne Ultimatum press tour. The actor mentions that William Shatner gave him the seal of approval, but also that Abrams is looking for someone in his early 20s. And as good an actor as Matt Damon is, he'd have trouble pulling of "21" with a straight face.

But it IS Comic Con week, so don't be surprised if we get some juicy new tidbits on this particular project.

If you'd like to see the video interview in which Damon (briefly) discusses his (non-) connection to Star Trek 11, check the source link below.

How come they claim he said all that, yet in the video he just loudly says his own name when asked about this?

The following is an excerpt from the interview that was left on the editing room floor:

Interviewer: Mr. Damon, I'd like to talk for a moment about the conflict in Darfur that you've been so vocal in condemning-

Matt Damon: (interrupting) MATT DAMON!!

Interviewer: Exactly. So, what can you tell our viewers about the situation in Darfur right now?

Matt Damon: MATT DAMON!!!

Interviewer nods thoughtfully.

Matt Damon: MATT DAMON... matt... (furrows his brow in contemplation) matt damon... (shakes his head with deep dismay)

Interviewer: Thank you, Mr. Damon, for that enlightening bit of wisdom.

I think it's high time that Abrams simply announced the cast. The speculating while good for publicity at first is getting a little boring because so far there is nothing to get excited about Star Trek XI.

Damon is pretty f'n talented, and just because most of you saw Team America doesn't make you funny or relevant.

I think he was doing a joke about Shatner repeating "Denny Crane" all the time on Boston Legal. Man that was funny.

I can see Afleck as Spock. Completely unemotional and straight face. Yea.

I think Trek films will always start from a bad place: they seem to be expected to be corny. Who really expects a grown man in a full body leotard to do action sequences from a Mission Impossible film? No one. Until they change that stereotype the movies will always be regarded as something that is slightly better than your average Sci Fi channel movie. At least, that's my opinon.

They need to cast unknowns. Damon, while a fine actor, comes with miles of baggage.

Wow... a choice: have fun and make jokes, OR spend your life defending pampered, over-paid eye candy... hmmmmm.

I think I'll keep making jokes.

Please go to any of the million Lindsay Lohan forums and try to convince all of those people that 'Lindsay is a really good person at heart and you guys should all try to be more understanding. Cause you don't know how hard it is to be her... oh, and she can ACT!"

Abrams expressed an interest in film a Kirk in his early 20s. Damon is roughly the same age that Shatner was when he played Kirk on the original series.
