Despite a shaky start and the presence of questionable elements throughout, by the time it arrives at its finale The Phantom Menace has won its place alongside the original Star Wars trilogy.

its not as bad as everyone says...a few quick edits of jar jar antics, midichlorians, and jake lloyds yippes would do alot to fix this lemon

It goes well beyond those things.
You have a boring plot that revolves around trade disagreements that just so happens to involve a couple of Jedi.
You have awful villains.
You have very, very little reason to cheer on the heroes beyond the fact that they just so happen to be the heroes.
You have atrocious acting from almost everyone involved (Ewan McGregor does alright).
You have obnoxious slapstick humor crammed in for no reason.
You have the pod race that is not only painfully boring but dominates a ridiculously huge chunk of the film.
You have an anti-climatic space sequence shoehorned in at the end for the sole purpose of giving the film its own space battle.
And then, yes, there's Jar Jar Binks and Anakin and the Midichlorians.
I remember being so damn excited for this film to release.
I also remember leaving the theater on opening night being extremely disappointed and remembering little more than that I had just spent a couple of hours just to see a very annoying child that couldn't act win a "pod race."

Where is all of this "atrocious acting" you are referring to? Who, besides Jake Lloyd, acted atrociously in this film?
Feb 2 - 12:03 AM
It's not the acting that was bad but the way the characters were written and woven into the plot.
Compare if you will:
Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, C3PO and Chewbacca as characters from the original and the relationships that they had to one-another, to: Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan, Padme, Anakin and Jar Jar and their relationships to one-another.
See what i mean?
The first were characters that you got to know and cared about, the second.... Nobody cared about these flat/lifeless/sexless/sterile/emotionless characters.

"Who, besides Jake Lloyd, acted atrociously in this film?"
Natalie Portman (Padme), Ahmed Best (Jar Jar), Pernilla August (Anakin's mom) and Silas Carson (Nute Gunray) are the most honorable mentions. Everyone else only did moderately okay with the terrible script that was given to them. Though I do agree that the quality of acting is limited greatly by the quality of the script.

Keith, watch the originals again and then this. please for the love of future reviews, see that there are no parallels; no similar zest; nothing but but the same creator. By the time they got to the III movie, I was long gone and didn't care. You should do an article on the total money grab by upgrading this low grade trilogy to faux 3-D.
