"Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace" got dismissive reviews in 1999, and it deserves the same today. But you probably know that.

"If you don't like a movie, just forget about it and be happy"
I think you are confused about what movie critics do.

Why they waste time talking about a movie so old like this one? It doesn't matter any more. Everybody knows about what was good and bad in this movie. It's funny to see that 6 years ago this movie was like 75%... And for people it doesn't matter, cause they go to the movies again and watch it, and the blu ray was a record in sales.
Feb 11 - 11:06 AM
So many people lined up, like me, because we love Star Wars. I cannot stand the prequels (though admittedly Ep 1 is my favorite of them. I'd give it about a 3.0 out of 10) and I really just sat there and ripped the entire movie, but it was Star Wars, and I watched it simply because I can't wait to see the Original Trilogy again in theaters (and in 3d).
Feb 13 - 11:34 AM
Because they review movies coming out, and this one was just re-released.
Feb 15 - 02:41 PM
Wow, never knew people in Peru had such bad taste in movies.
Feb 11 - 06:45 AM
Well, you'll see that in te US it will have a good box office too.

In Your Dreams
This movie is a joke in the U.S. and abroad. Go lick some peanut butter off George Lucas's nuts.
Feb 11 - 01:30 PM
Of course Ep1 did well. Everybody was expecting more of the old Star Wars. Its like the terrible Last Airbender that got critical ticket sales (and coming out with a sequel) because ppl were expecting the cartoon quality translated into silver screen.
Feb 13 - 07:09 PM
Sorry to tell you but it's opening weekend in the states netted less than US$23 million; that's pathetic, considering the original release netted close to US$70 million opening weekend. The Phantom Menace was perhaps the greatest letdown in the history of cinema for good reason. If it's doing so well in Peru perhaps it just doesn't have any competition to speak of.
Feb 22 - 09:53 PM
how are people meant to improve their films if the people who don't like it just "forget about it and be happy"?
It's like parenting - if you do nothing but praise the kid, they think they are doing the right thing regardless and make no attempts to improve. The kid, therefore, becomes a dick.
Feb 11 - 02:29 PM
Go to your room, George!
Feb 11 - 11:22 PM
The entire point of a review is to give people an idea how good or bad a movie generally is before they go out and spend 30 dollars on some 3D piece of tripe.
If Lucasarts is going to release the same mediocre movie with a cheap gimmick and jacked up prices, they deserve to be scrutinized for it, and I'm glad there's critics doing their job in alerting(in my case reaffirming what I already know) potential moviegoers that this rerelease is every bit the ripoff that it looks to be.

Well, if this was the only movie I could see in the middle of Peru, I'd probably like it, too.

"reviews" like this make me question why someone is paid to do it. so vague!
Feb 10 - 05:14 PM
Yeah, why is George Lucas still getting paid, he's totally right!
Feb 15 - 11:09 AM
Really you just need to read a review of the original release and then put some annoying 3D glasses on for the added effect. It doesn't change the plot, the characters, the cinematography, the acting or the writing; the important bits.
Feb 22 - 09:56 PM
Did you even read the whole thing?
Feb 25 - 11:55 PM
anybody can spam comments ^ how bout you try to say something related to this film or reviews of it?...
Feb 10 - 08:32 PM
even if people hate the film, some might still see it. You can't judge it by that Kike C.
Feb 10 - 09:47 PM
He can't, or you won't let him?
Feb 11 - 09:44 AM
I saw this when it first came out and didn't really care for it, no need to pay for it again. I don't understand this fascination with 3D anyway, I find it rather distracting most of the time.
Feb 11 - 10:45 AM
Man - Ep. I's dropped 5% so far.
Do you think Ep. II (currently 67%) will fall to rotten?
Feb 11 - 11:20 PM
Let's hope so.
It will drop because it's actually worse than this turd in a lot of ways. Glad to see this hit the rotten rating it's deserved for years.
Feb 12 - 08:26 AM
And under 40% on top critics now. Cratering.
Feb 15 - 02:53 PM
"A bore"? You're insane. There isn't a single scene in TPM that isn't filled with beauty, wonder, and imagination. Stupid troll.
Feb 13 - 04:32 AM
Hah! Midiclorians would like a word.
Feb 13 - 07:17 AM
I can name a few scenes that lack "beauty, wonder and imagination." How about the 10 minute lunch sequence where Qui Gon, Padme, Jar-Jar, Anakin and Anakin's barely-there mother discuss the Republic's jurisdiction over slaves? Or the scene where Anakin's random friends tell him he's going to lose the race. Or the couple scenes where Qui Gon and Watto negotiate bets. Or the scenes where Obi-Wan sits bored in the Naboo Cruiser. Did those scenes really have beauty, wonder, and imagination in them? Or have you no capacity for critical thought?

One of the most insipid movies I've ever seen.
Feb 14 - 07:02 PM
I find prequel trilogy much better than the original trilogy. Attack of the Clones was the best.
Feb 17 - 08:40 AM
You must only care for how real the computer animated graphics in a movie look over the story and the acting. The Phantom Menace and the two movies after it are nothing compared to the original trilogy of Star Wars.
Feb 17 - 04:11 PM
The new films are filled with plot holes, bad acting, cluttered shots and poor cinematography, pointless action sequences that often seem to direct the plot more than the other way around, god awful writing and (in the Phantom Menace) no clear-cut protagonist. But to each his own of course. The special effects in the original release of Phantom Menace were very nice I'll give it that.
Feb 22 - 10:07 PM
I only wish to know why George Lucas tried to destroy the Star Wars myth with this crap. I think he went insane.
Feb 17 - 06:33 PM
ya know instead of just troll bashing this movie, Mr. "critic" (*coughs* NOT), why don't you actually do a little analyzing not only of the movie, but the grand scheme of the STORY and the TECHNICAL FILMMAKING instead of being a whiny little bitch who just got his cornflakes pissed into.
Feb 17 - 08:55 PM
ok, lets talk about story.
the "trade federation" set up a "blockade" in order to get the queen to sign a treaty to "make their invasion legal."
Why did they set up the blockade? because a man in a cloak that they don't know promise them something that the audience doesn't even know about.
Btw, the blockade? Easy to maneuver- you just need to have a "shield generator." Don't even get me started at the piss poor decision making from every character (like the droids landing on the OPPOSITE SIDE OF NABOO TO INVADE, Jedis taking Jar Jar Binks)
BTW is there actually a main character in this movie? I don't see one. Obi won and the queen sit around bitching, anakin is introduced an hour into the movie... who do we even care about?
Feb 20 - 08:43 AM
In all honesty though, my favorite part might be when the "two jedi knights" (in the beginning credits it says obi won is a jedi knight when hes not) disguised as civilians, are IMMEDIATELY identified as jedi knights by a DROID...
then how do they kill them? well lets see what 5 year old script writer george lucas has to say...
"Use a colorful, noisy, smelly, gas."
(DONT USE CARBON MONOXIDE!)
honestly i dont see how anyone can actually enjoy this movie
Feb 20 - 08:46 AM
Ha ha, SOMEBODY'S seen Redlettermedia. Ever since I watched that, I've pulled that "describe Han Solo without visuals, then Queen Amidala/Qui Gonn Jin" thing on several people. The only one people can manage is Jar Jar, those descriptors being "annoying", "insipid" and "retarded".
Earnestly though, this movie sucked.
Feb 22 - 07:24 PM
Why bother critiquing story and technical film making if it's just a re-release of an older movie, with no change whatsoever besides the 3d?
Feb 25 - 02:11 PM
people still defending this movie...it's been over a decade folks, this film is universally regarded as terrible. here's a quick technical critique for ya'll. any scene with dialogue is shot with two cameras over the shoulder, like a soap opera. truly uninspired.
