Well said. I thought the same thing when I watched this movie. However, I actually think it hit the mark. Great review.

Great replay value, just like Princess Bride. Not nearly as quotable and the adventure is less storybookish, but let's be honest that movie is just perfect and can't be duplicated. Startdust is a great new fairytale and one helluva romantic comedy. Same genre, which is to say one of two, or one of two worth watching. My girlfriend cries every time; I crack a guilty smile. Not perfect, but close enough to call it even.

I completely missed this one as a theatrical release, which surprises me -- I've enjoyed the entire Neil Gaiman canon and would have run to the theater to see it if it had come to my attention. Was this film promoted at all?

I agree that it's certainly not nearly as quotable as Princess Bride, but that's not a surprise. Princess Bride's greatest strength was its wit; Stardust is careful not to let repartee between characters overshadow the story itself, which is elaborately detailed and powerfully compelling. But the true "star" of the film was the radiant Claire Danes. She's the reason I can't stop watching this one.
