Movie Info

In this moving silent melodrama, lovely small-town girl Stella Dallas hastily marries a young blueblood with whom she has nothing in common to escape the painful aftermath of her father's suicide. With so little to base it on, the marriage crumbles soon after she bears a daughter. Her husband returns to New York without her. Raising her child alone is a terrible struggle for Stella who reluctantly divorces her husband and sends her daughter (who does not want to go) to be with her father and his new wife. The daughter grows up and gets engaged to a handsome socialite. By this time, poor selfless Stella is destitute. Not wanting to embarrass her daughter on her wedding day, Stella makes one final sacrifice and refuse to attend the ceremony. Instead she contents herself to stand alone in the rain watching her daughter's wedding through the window of her ex-husband's mansion. As tears flow gently down her cheeks, a policeman ambles up and brusquely tells the homeless woman to go on about her business.more

Though it includes some respectable elements, it is essentially a trashy moving picture based on a trashy story.

A mother picture. Not a great picture, but a great mother picture. Its sentiment is terrific.
