Despite the occasional dramatic clichè and some predictable dialogue, however, the melodrama is often effective.

Their new stepmother, Isabel (Julia Roberts), wants to be involved in the children's life, but is unwilling to sacrifice anything for her work. Jackie considers this to be selfish and rude, sparking a conflict between the two women. When cancer enters the picture, everyone is forced to grow in order to settle their differences. A tearjerker in the truest sense of the word. [More]

Reviews for Stepmom
Through the performances and screenplay, we often do get some extremely well-written and intelligent scenes.
Conveys many of the difficulties inherent in the stepfamily arrangement and the insecurities we all tend to feel when we compare ourselves to others.
doesn't come close to delivering the punch of director Alan Parker's 'Shoot The Moon,' a much sturdier movie on a similar subject, but nevertheless Roberts and particularly Sarandon work overtime to make this hit-and-miss script click.
These two actresses are so galvanized and team up so well that the women's relationship soon upstages anything having to do with the man.
A decently constructed dramatic piece that mainly succeeds simply because of what its great cast pours into it.
If there's a market out there for a good post-Christmas cry, Stepmom will succeed.
The film's effectiveness had less to do with the story than it did the strong work of the actors.
When Susan Sarandon wants you to cry, you cry. When Julia Roberts wants you to smile, you smile.
Never feels either real enough to move us deeply or bubbly enough to make us forget our woes.
