Consensus: Kevin Bacon's acting is so genuine that it's creepy and director David Keopp knows how to create true suspense.

Runtime: 1 hr 39 mins

Genre: Horror/Suspense

Synopsis: Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon), husband and father of a precocious young son, finds his blue-collar Chicago existence altered after he is hypnotized at a neighborhood party. What started as a diversion... Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon), husband and father of a precocious young son, finds his blue-collar Chicago existence altered after he is hypnotized at a neighborhood party. What started as a diversion turns disturbing as a post-hypnotic suggestion releases a subconscious power Tom didn't know he had. Maggie (Kathryn Erbe), his wife, grows increasingly concerned with the strange behavior of her husband and her son, as they become obsessed with the notion that there is an otherworldly presence living in their house. Plagued by searing headaches, horrific visions and the fear that his family is in grave danger, Tom is compelled to discover the source of the visions, even if it means unearthing a horrible neighborhood secret. The film itself has a stiff dramatic spine and a canny performance by Kevin Bacon.

This is pretty good stuff: an entertaining and reasonably frightening thriller that, quite shamelessly, makes you laugh and jump almost at the same time.

If you are into the horror film genre without all the perfunctory gore, put this one on your must-see list.

Stir of Echoes is one of the year's best films, is based on a best selling novel, and features Kevin Bacon in one of his most skilful performances.

In its own smart, spooky way, Stir of Echoes, with Kevin Bacon, is nearly as good as its Bruce Willis predecessor.

works up a convincingly chilly atmosphere and has a few jolting moments. ...Bacon is outstanding, and Douglas and Erbe do wonders with their somewhat sketchy roles.

In a taut, grippingly intense performance, Bacon captures the frenetic torment of a man driven to extremes by forces he can't begin to fathom.

Where The Sixth Sense makes you feel like you're enveloped in an atmosphere of the uncanny, Stir of Echoes makes you feel like you're being toyed with.

Stir of Echoes might have worked just fine a few decades ago, but it now seems too simply schematic to spook us as much as it wants to.

It all falls apart in the final third, which feels particularly sloppy and nearly destroys the entire film.
