Amidst a script that starts, stalls and plods along, Stewart is an inspiration who could probably tell 'Yo Mamma jokes to the Brady clan and Partridge family and still be their best friend.

Mr. Stewart gives such a winning performance that it is almost impossible to imagine anyone else playing the role of the Chicago White Sox pitcher whose bright future was suddenly and tragically darkened by adversity in 1938.

As directed by Same Wood, this sports biopic is too earnest and too concerned with being inspirational, but Jimmy Stewart is good.
