Slightly overlong effort is full of striking, fresh visual interludes showing cars, speed and the sensations surrounding the scene.

Director Joey Curtis paints a classical and yet urgently contemporary urban myth of youth rivalry, love and war. Inner city player Chato, a first generation Guatemalan-American growing up in the hood of Crenshaw, Los Angeles, realizes the cost of infidelity when he opens the door for two star-crossed lovers. Chato's childhood sweetheart, Noza, possessing the grace and innocence of a Mexican-born princess, falls in love with Quattro, a white street racer from the desert, who races down the same two-lane blacktop as his father before him. Their relationship sets the stage for a bitter vendetta in which all parties compete for the highest stakes. Driving this narrative with fantastic imagery, Curtis elevates ordinary teenage experiences of friendship and romance to the stuff of folklore. And though the sounds are louder and the cars are faster, older audiences will recognize that "Streets of Legend" may well be the grandchild of "American Graffiti." --© Lions Gate Films [More]

Reviews for Streets of Legend
Imagine Vin Diesel and Paul Walker's street-racing saga The Fast and the Furious transformed into a lyrical, stylized romantic tragedy and one would have some idea of what Joey Curtis' unsparing yet beguiling Streets of Legend is like.
An overly melodramatic romantic triangle ensues ... all of which takes a back seat to the more exciting scenes of roadsters buzzing along the 10 at speeds of 140 mph.
It's more muscle than high-formula, and it clanks, sputters and spins out in its pedal-to-the-story medal style.
Interspersed are several aptly named drag races, completely devoid of dramatic substance, that are seemingly inserted into the script solely to show off helmer Joey Curtis’ experiments with high-definition video.
The big finish... is uber-hokey and after a while the tricky effects become hard to take. There’s definitely something here, but it would take 20 minutes of cuts to get to a point where a teenage audience... could sit still and enjoy it.
