The effects are cheesy and Supergirl's wide-eyed, cheery heroine simply isn't interesting to watch for an hour and a half.

A big-budget spin-off from the series of three successful Superman movies, this film stars Helen Slater as the counterpart to the famous comic-book superhero. Supergirl is Kara, Superman's young cousin. She is sent to Earth is search of a Krypton power source, a lost ring that has been turned into a paperweight. She disguises herself as Linda Lee, a meek high-school student. Peter O'Toole is Zaltar, a mad villain who wants to use the power of the ring to take over the world. Faye Dunaway plays

Screenplay is filled with witty lines and enjoyable characters, but Jeannot Szwarc's direction is rather flat.
Top CriticThis is one comic-book feature that doesn't fly.
Why even go to the trouble of making a movie that feels like it's laughing at itself?
Miss Slater makes a four-square heroine of unrelenting sincerity; a sturdy ingenue, she is great fun to look at but hardly a live wire.
Female superhero can't save this '80s clunker.
a big fat what the f-word
Jeannot Szwarc's direction is flat and uninspired, emphasizing the jokey elements without any sense at all for the material.
The plain fact is that director Jeannot Szwarc turns in a movie so ludicrous and overblown that it skips right over any semblance of logic and into a self-absorbed flight of fancy.
Boils down to a sexist catfight between two fairly powerful women for the affections of a fashionably unshaven landscaper.
The tagline -- "Her first great adventure." -- is wrong in at least three ways.
So silly it can't even be lumped in the 'so bad it's good' category.
Most delightful of the Super-series for its good-natured disregard of narrative considerations.
Still something appealing about it. It's "so bad it's good", if you will. That could be the fittingly cast Helen Slater as Supergirl and her alter-ego Linda Lee, it could be the fun escapist fare of a film such as this or it could be the fact that it's t
Super-vacuous.
The Girl of Steel deserves a better movie, and a better actress to play her. Slater is very cute and looks good in the tights, but is far too wooden. Plot is utterly ridiculous.
Finally Supergirl gets a movie! If you love the comics and the Superman movies, you should check this movie out. Not that it's a classic or anything, actually I love it because it's so bad that it's good. Plus, I love Slater as Supergirl, she's cool.

Not great, but one star for Peter Cook, one star for Marc McClure linking the 'super' films as Jimmy and 2 stars for Helen Slater being so damn sexy in a short skirt and red boots!
