"Man of Steel" Ready to Start Next Summer?
by Fred Topel | May 15, 2007
Discuss Article
Bryan Singer is working on the WWII movie "Valkyrie" before he goes into production on "Superman: The Man of Steel." However, he's got writers Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty working on the script and other producers getting things ready, so he'll be ready to go as soon as "Valkyrie" is done.

"The idea is ['Valkyrie'] will be finished by the end of the year," said Singer. "So it'll be sometime next year. Sometime in the middle of next year, summer of next year. Probably summer."

"Superman Returns"'s standout scene was the airplane rescue, presented in 3D in some Imax theaters. Topping that may be Singer's biggest challenge. "Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. [Harris and Dougherty] just write it, they type in some huge gigantic thing and then I'm just there for eight months. It's tough, it's tough. That's a very complicated sequence. It'll be tough to do something but whatever."

On the set of "Superman Returns."

What they have in store for "Man of Steel" may determine how quickly after the summer '08 production the film gets into theaters. "It depends on how complex those airplane rescue topping sequences are and how long they take to shoot."

Harris and Dougherty have decided on villains for the new film, but can't confirm who they are yet. "They need a good approval from the chief," said Harris. "But, yeah, Superman is only as good as his villains."

Singer confers with Brandon Routh and Kevin Spacey.

Singer added that he has options for Kevin Spacey and Parker Posey to reprise their roles of Luthor and Kitty.

Also part of the "Superman" crew, John Ottman has already started contemplating a new musical score for Man of Steel. "Between the John Williams theme in the beginning and the end of the movie which his bookended with it, there's like two hours of original score that I wrote," said Ottman. "It's hard to remember that there's so much original music so I have a lot of new themes I established and hopefully I can expand upon those in the next film. And if there's new characters, I can come up with new ones of my own which is great when a franchise expands and new characters come about."

I for one am looking for a more action packed, special effects extravaganza. I just hope they have at least two "good" villains. Doomsday would be cool, and so would Brainiac. I also like Darkseid.

Is he going to go full out as the worlds superhero and not an a American patriot, as he was originally conceived? Will he toss his american flag styled outfit out and go with a blue and white costume complete with the powder blue helmet?

Exactly "Superman is only as good as his villains", and in Superman Returns Luthor wasnt all he could be. Thats why the movie wasnt great, just real good.

Make Luthor get patents from the Krypto technology he knows about, become a billionaire respected business man that everyone loves, THEN you have an interesting relationship between Superman and Lex. Add a supervillian that Lex may have something to do with like Brainiac and you have a movie worthy of Superman.

Doomsday i hope!
I would love to see a well rendered version of Doomsday, a ferocious character that in the comics actually killed superman! That would be a fight worthy of the Man of steel.

Also, remember the green shaft of kryptonite pulled from supermans kidneys soaked in super--blood? I wonder if that will have some big part to play? A genetic Doomsday infused with the kryptonite?

Too soon for Doomsday. I say Brainiac and Corbin. Lex could easily tie into either one of those characters. I like Admiral's idea. I also like Darkseid because he's an apocalyptic character. With him Superman could easily transcend his "American hero" status and defend the world from a global attack.

Superman Returns was not a disappointment... Now, X3 and PotC 2 THOSE were disappointments! SR was everything you'd expect it to be. Bryan Singer is awesome, I can't imagine a more worthy director. X-men was alot like SR, it sets up the characters. In the sequel, just like X2, Bryan will unleash hell! 2009 is gonna fuckin rock!

I'm lost. Powder blue helmet? What's wrong with being "an a American patriot" and the "worlds superhero" at the same time? I thought that was a non-issue after the Reeves films. I guess not for U.S. bashers...

One of the writers also mentioned that they have heard the criticism from the fans, and that they are willing to learn from those mistakes. It's nice to know that our voice is being heard from time to time.

Let's hope this sequel is a MAJOR financial success and not just mildly profitable like the first...then we might actually see our dream project: Batman vs. Superman!!!!!!!

I don't know what people are bitching about... I thought Superman Returns was amazing, Bryan Singer knows how to add emotion and story to his superhero movies...something that's been lacking in the comic book movies of late. With the exception of Batman Begins, Superman was probably the best comic book movie since X2. The Spider-man movies were waaay overrated even before the third one

How are the going to ruin the character more. Give him another illegitimate child, make him look like a bitch, have him only speak two lines, have him never throw a punch, have him lift another mountain of kryptonite?

Get rid of Singer, and Routh then MAYBE this movie might not the second worst comic book movie ever like the first.

By what scale are you determining that it is the second worst comic book movie ever? Reviews? Nope, those were pretty good. Fans? Nope, quite a few of us liked it as well. Personal opinion? Check!

Bryan Singer is a well-established, quality director who likes Superman and wants to do right by him. His first movie was a tribute piece to Richard Donner's movie ... I have faith that he will now expand and create his own vision using Richard Donner's base. Routh wasn't the best actor in the world but he mimicked Reeve just like he was probably asked to (after all, he even delivered some of the same lines). Let's get him into the character and things should take off (literally I wager).

What are you talking about? THE VAST MAJORITY OF FANS HATED THE MOVIE, IT WAS A JOKE.

So by giving him an illegitimate son, making him look weak, giving him two lines is giving the character justice?

How about he gains like 60 pounds of muscle, does not sound like a little bitch, get rid of the kid, get a new lois lane, new director, get a writer who actuallys knows about superman, have him fight someone other than Lex, NO KRYPTONITE ISLAND THAT HE IS SOMEHOW ABLE TO LIFT, then maybe this movie might be okay at best. Superman is such a bad character it is really hard to make a good movie about him.
