Drunken Mastermind writes: on Apr 02 2008 05:22 AM Blashphemy! Spacey is a great actor, and Luthor is actually very good character.(in my eyes) (Reply to this) |

CFM writes: on Apr 02 2008 05:32 AM I seem to be one of the few who really liked Superman Returns. And I loved Spacey as Luthor. I say bring 'em on for the sequel! (Reply to this) |

dylan21484nj writes: on Apr 02 2008 05:55 AM the movie Luthor would be a better character if he was updated. in the comics, he's a billionaire businessman who hides his devious affairs behind his public profile of businessman/philanthropist. he's no longer the scheming mad scientist he was in the early years. if they can make Spacey's Luthor the businessman Luthor and make his character an underlying threat rather than the main villain again, then his character would be much more interesting and less gimmicky. tomwaitsjr writes: on Apr 02 2008 05:58 AM . . . I think the implied "superbaby" from Superman Returns should turn evil over spoiled breast milk and then proceed to kick his father in the nuts. Doesn't Superman owe CHILD SUPPORT?!?!?! Bastard. (Reply to this) |
|
LordVapor writes: on Apr 02 2008 06:33 AM LOL @ child support comment. Spacey did about as good as could be done with Lex Luthor...not really to much to the character. "Act mean, have some quipps, pretty much be hellbent on killing Supes...." There can only be one Gene Hackman anyway. But bring Spacey back....have him interact with Darkseid or something. :) (Reply to this) |

Gimy writes: on Apr 02 2008 06:56 AM spacey did a fine job but the role sucks. nobody believes an old guy is gonna have a chance against a SUPERman. thats like trying to say Andy Griffith could fight Kimbo and actually have a chance. its not at all believeable. ntil they bring in an ACTUAL supervillian(Darkseid seems to be the most wanted choice) this series will continue to be somewhat...well, boring. its a shame because the first one wasn't THAT bad but...it won't get any better until they realize that flaw (Reply to this) |

largely writes: on Apr 02 2008 06:57 AM yes I too am a believer in Superman Returns and look forward to a sequel with eager anticipation. I actually didn't like John Byrne's rebooted Lex from the 80's. I feel like Byrne was trying too hard to make Lex into a Marvel character by making him above the law as a wealthy corporate exec (you know like all corporate execs are), so he will have this "moral ambiguity" to him now." I mean besides the old Lex is this worn out old stereotype of an evil mad scientist, thats so outdated and un- modern ." Yeah tell that to Hitler and Osama Bin Lauden. Why do you think the comics and the Justice League Unlimited TV show made Lexy a regular "mad scientist" again. Because cold hard evil no matter how hard we try to psychologize it unfortunately never goes out of fashion. (Yes I know my spelling stinks.) (Reply to this) |

ffamilyguy writes: on Apr 02 2008 07:02 AM In reply to this comment (#1665548) I agree, Superman Returns was a great way to bring back the Superman franchise. It sucks because in this day in age, most people want dark demented characters, including the superheroes. Well, sorry to say, but Superman was a nice guy....until he met Doomsday! LOL (Reply to this) |

Prosper761 writes: on Apr 02 2008 08:15 AM In reply to this comment (#1665557) Actually, Lois Lane's "Superbaby" would be the bastard; not Superman. (Reply to this) |
|
largely writes: on Apr 02 2008 08:29 AM Maybe this is because Supes now sees that evil is not something that is just a product of someone's up bringing or their enviroment, but that many people (or Creatures in Doomsday's case) are just bad. And maybe Supes even sees that in the blink of an eye he or any of us not only have the potential to do evil things, but that could be evil as well. (Reply to this) |

duckmanx88 writes: on Apr 02 2008 08:51 AM i hated that they made him have a kid. totally ruined the earth one mythos. myabe this is like a dif earth where all this stuff takes place. but the movie was boring. he better fight something that doesn't break in half with a flick of his finger. (Reply to this) |

BowieSwimmer writes: on Apr 02 2008 09:04 AM Spacey is a god. Don't hate. He was one of the few good things about Superman Returns. (Reply to this) |
|
xenogears writes: on Apr 02 2008 09:39 AM I think the kid angle was great and bad at the same time. It adds a deep element when thought out. Like the fact that Lois is now his Baby's Mama rather than his wife. And She has been tricking another man in to believing he's the daddy when he is not. And Super does owe child support but lois doesn't know his real name (Clark Kent) and I doubt Superman has a P.O. box so they wouldn't know where to send the papers to get support from him. And who gets custody? Normally the mom but how would a human mom discipline a super child. A belt ain't gonna do it. Super would be better equiped to reaise a super kid but he is always dashing off. This would deffinitely make the father/son picnic interesting. On a side not I would love to see them do the Death and Return of Superman story line. (Reply to this) |

Floor Man writes: on Apr 02 2008 09:45 AM Singer *is* and absolute genius. I can't wait to see more of his stuff; he's young! :) (Reply to this) |

tomwaitsjr writes: on Apr 02 2008 10:38 AM In reply to this comment (#1665925) Heh Heh. Your analysis is dead-on. I bet the appeals process would take forever. . . (Reply to this) |

sensesfail8 writes: on Apr 02 2008 11:51 AM Spacey is amazing! I loved him as Lex. And I enjoyed Superman Returns. Can't wait for a sequel. (Reply to this) |

Merlin235 writes: on Apr 02 2008 12:36 PM People may be taking back all that "Singer is a genius" stuff when his new movie with Tom Cruise comes out. Word is it is a total hack job, worth of some serious mocking. But that's just the word from a couple critics so far, who knows. Spacey was fine as Lex, but the character was limited by the screenplay. He'd be good to bring back, but I agree with whoever said to make him a more businessman, behind the scenes threat type of guy. (Reply to this) |
|
salsafish writes: on Apr 02 2008 12:40 PM Interesting to see the divide on Lex. It may be true that only a comic geek believes that a smart evil guy can beat a physically powerful guy. It's important to remember, though, that not everyone roots for the 'good' guy. Do you like Batman as well? You must know that there are close to zero instances of Superman ever 'beating' Batman at anything, in any media they have appeared in. Superman has been outwitted and physically humiliated many times by Batman. Do you think that's silly or impossible also? It's completely plausible because Superman will not do anything that's possible to win, and all of his enemies know this. He will face every problem forehead first. (Reply to this) |

Shatter24 writes: on Apr 02 2008 01:37 PM In reply to this comment (#1665554) I completely agree w/ Dylan. Luthor needs an updating. Bridge the gap between businessman/respectable and the criminal mastermind in the next movie. Keep him as a side threat, not the main one. (Reply to this) |
|
Shatter24 writes: on Apr 02 2008 01:40 PM In reply to this comment (#1665671) The Superman animated series, by the creators of Justice League, had Lex start out as the wealthy industrialist and his hatred of Supes made him lose it all and deginerate to evil underground criminal mastermind. (Reply to this) |

ManofStee1 writes: on Apr 02 2008 02:15 PM In reply to this comment (#1666079) I've liked most of Singer's stuff for far, but I have to agree with you when you say Valkyrie looks like a hack job. The characters are playing NAZI OFFICERS with AMERICAN accents for christ's sake! (Reply to this) |
|
harrismonkey writes: on Apr 02 2008 02:19 PM I thought Luthor was the best thing about that movie. But honestly, Spacey really isn't the in demand item he was for a while there. I imagine most roles in big movies look pretty appealing to him at the moment.- That's not to say he may not manage to bounce back. He is a very solid actor. (Reply to this) |
|
Merlin235 writes: on Apr 02 2008 02:39 PM ManofStee1 - I agree with you, I have enjoyed most of Singer's stuff up to this point. I'm lukewarm on SR, but other than that he hasn't made a crappy movie in my mind. (Reply to this) |

ZebraBob writes: on Apr 02 2008 03:49 PM Spacey made a fine Lex...Singer just needed to make a better script, a few too many callbacks to the original Donner flicks (and while the kid was an interesting way to go, every Superman flick afterwards is then grounded into a timeline.."Hey, how old is the super brat now?")...Lex just needs to adjust his thinking about 'Mind over Muscle'...why not build Metallo to go after Superman, but Lex having to bow to his own ego would of course build his own super suit and have to join in the fray! Now THERE's a slug fest waiting to happen!! (and if Singer feels he needs to still pay some homage to the earlier flicks...how about bringing back Otis? He could be how Lex gets off the 'island') (Reply to this) |

nathanpoitras writes: on Apr 02 2008 03:50 PM I like Superman, Lex Luthor and Spacey, but it's time for a new villain, something really friggin' big too. I want to Superman being squeezed in some masssive monster's fist. (Reply to this) |
|
The House writes: on Apr 02 2008 04:32 PM Superman Returns got some of the sentiment and characters right, but bringing in the kid was ridiculous because Singer is in a position where he probably has no resolution to this idea. (Reply to this) |
