DC Comics Chief Discusses "Wonder Woman" Delays

When a movie takes three or four years to get off the ground, it's often seen as a problematic project, but that theory doesn't always hold true for superhero flicks. DC Comics prez Paul Levitz recently had an illuminating conversation with Canmag.com, and he explained why these super-flicks sometimes take forever to get into production.

From Canmag.com: "I can’t emphasize enough how normal it is for these projects to take forever. The gap between signing the contract for "Superman I" and the film coming out was six years. The gap between signing the contract that led to the first Tim Burton "Batman" movie and the film was nine and a half years. The gap between the last of the first cycle of "Batman" films and "Batman Begins" was nine years I think. It was about 9 or 10 years since we got the Superman film rights back into Warner Brothers before we got this one going. For whatever set of reasons, and it’s not just us, "Spider-Man" was a worse mess than we’ve ever seen in terms of the business maneuvers that it took to get it done. By their nature these are big and complex things to put together. You don’t build them fast."

Mr. Levitz also informs us that Joss Whedon is very nearly finished his "Wonder Woman" script. Obviously we'll be bringing you a lot more info on this project as word comes in.

You guys must be thinking of the Charisma from Buffy. She was real whiney and bratty, and, well, that's b/c it was her character. Now, later in the Angel series she became tough and could fend for herself, which showed her true acting ability as a star. Or you guys might be thinking of that stupid SciFi original she was in called Voodoo Moon, but, let's face it, SciFi originals are bad most the time anyway. This could be Charisma's big break. I know she'll do perfect if cast.

Anyways, no, I think they're better off with an unknown like Routhe (we'll see if he's good or not) and Christian Bale (not an "unknown" persay, but he wasn't mainstream until Batman). I think this one is going to be the hardest superhero flick to adapt. Even with Whedon behind it I just don't know how this can be good. With all the superhero movies coming down the pipeline I think they should just leave WW alone and give the money to Whedon to make a Serenity 2.... :)

They wouldn't make this if they didn't want a franchise, so an older actress like Carpenter is unlikely. It will be a fresh young unknown who everyone will whine about until they see the movie and then they will gush.

i agree they should cast an unknown. Biel would suck something hard, even though she's hot. I heard today that the dvd sales for Serenity were so high that they are making serenity two! Has anyone heard the same thing?

oh yeah... umm... yay wonderwoman and her stupid invisible jet. hahaha... "here, jessica, just sit in this green chair in front of a green screen and pretend you're flying something invisible. Ok, good? No, that's all wrong..."

This movie'll flop no matter what. You should be wishing it on actresses you DON'T like as opposed to someone you do. It's not very easy to pull off a woman lead action movie, let alone a woman lead supehero film.

Regardless of the lack of acting skills for most of them, all of the names tossed out so far are women who are too small to play the part. Sure, they may be pretty, but Wonder Woman needs to be more than pretty. Wonder Woman is an Amazon, a goddess--she needs to be tall and statuesque. We're talking a woman who's 6 feet tall (or taller). She can't look like she can be broken in half just by thinking about it. We're talking someone who's built like Brigiette Nielsen (think Red Sonya, before she got really weird) or Lucy Lawless (but prettier). Of course, that would probably just give most of the men in the audience an inferiority complex... ;)

The only way they'll pull it off is with an unknown. I think I read/heard somewhere that Joss is looking for an unknown, which means I'll be there. They cast Jessica, Charisma, or some other waif and I'm out.

There's a lot more to the Wonder Woman mythos than Linda Carter and invisible planes. There's a good movie in there somewhere.

I agree...cast an unknown, surrounded by legit actors that can carry the movie. As for the movie itself - *YAWN*. Zero interest in the character or the story. Whedon's involvement makes it a little bit more intriguing but not nearly enough.

No, I'm not kidding. Watch the last few seasons of Angel to see her "acting chops." Plus, she's tall and drop dead gorgeous. Whedon loves her, having worked with her for 8 years. and she's not so well known with the general public that she would own the role (ala Routh in Superman).

She was in Playboy? That probably pretty much kills her chances right there. No matter how much Whedon would want it, that's likely very offputting to DC and whoever's making the movie.
