Consensus: Critics praise Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown for its charming, light-hearted comedy and quality acting.

Woody Allen's pseudo-biopic about 1930's jazz guitarist Emmet Ray (Sean Penn) is a personal tribute by the director to a period of musical history that has inspired and influenced him greatly. Penn immerses himself into the role of the boozing, womanizing Ray with his usual intensity (this time, with a comic slant). Cameos by Allen and author Nat Hentoff give the film a TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN feel, but it is Fei Zhao's rich photography, as well as the solid musical sequences, that provide the film with its depth. Overall, though, this is a lighthearted effort that aims solely for the funny bone. Samantha Morton steals the show as Ray's silently suffering wife in a breakout role that should elevate her to the forefront of Hollywood actresses. [More]

There's a reason why 'sweet' comes before 'lowdown' in the title, and Morton is it.

The jazz is certainly here, but the passion is missing.

The atmosphere, combined with Sweet and Lowdown's entertaining momentum and zippy jazz score, makes it easy for you to get swept away for 90 minutes of great jazz and good fun.

Emmet Ray is a fictional character, but so convincing in Woody Allen's Sweet and Lowdown that he seems like a real chapter of jazz history we somehow overlooked.

I'm not a big Woody Allen fan, but this is a good one.

A jazz odyssey that works thanks to a stunning lead performance of a fascinating character.

Sweet and Lowdown isn't as unfocused or bilious as recent Allen movies, but it's still pretty mundane.

Sweet and Lowdown is undeniably pleasant, but British actress Samantha Morton quietly explodes it: Her performance is like nothing I've seen in recent years.
