For Christina Walters (Cameron Diaz), the answer is the San Francisco nightclub where she meets Peter Donahue (Thomas Jane). Unfortunately, their meeting is fleeting and this quintessential hip party girl is left in unfamiliar territory--smitten by a total stranger. Determined to see her best friend happy, Courtney Rockliffe (Christina Applegate) takes Christina on a road trip to Peter's sleepy California hometown in search of the man of her dreams. In the meantime, Christina's roommate, the just-dumped Jane Burns (Selma Blair), engages in her own lusty pursuits. Diaz and Applegate have great chemistry and are utterly believable as best friends. The script by Nancy M. Pimental, who wrote for South Park, blends raunchy humor and sentimentality, both of which are complimented by a healthy dose of sight gags. Directed by Roger Kumble (CRUEL INTENTIONS), THE SWEETEST THING is an amusing--albeit somewhat crude--look at what people will do for love. The film also features Jason Bateman in fine form as Peter's brother, indie queen Parker Posey as a bride-to-be, and a brief appearance by Applegate's real-life husband, actor Jonathan Schaech. It made me laugh. And in a film like this, that is the only defense for liking it.

The entire film is one big excuse to play one lewd scene after another. About half of them are funny, a few are sexy and none are useful in telling the story, which is paper-thin and decidedly unoriginal.

Seems to have been assembled (at short notice, with blindfolds on) by people who have never seen any movies outside of Cameron Diaz vehicles.

A silly, sophomoric and often rather funny and cute tale.

A slick bit of often-entertaining vulgarity that just may click with its intended audience.

Loses its sense of humor in a vat of failed jokes, twitchy acting, and general boorishness.

The Sweetest Thing has nothing insightful to say about relationships, and nothing funny to say about the singles scene.

Any similarity between the characters, persons, institutions or events in this movie and those, living or dead, in Sex and the City is purely coincidental because the folks who made this movie couldn't pull it off no matter how hard they try.

There are remnants of romantic comedy, but they are obscured by gross-out humor.
