For Christina Walters (Cameron Diaz), the answer is the San Francisco nightclub where she meets Peter Donahue (Thomas Jane). Unfortunately, their meeting is fleeting and this quintessential hip party girl is left in unfamiliar territory--smitten by a total stranger. Determined to see her best friend happy, Courtney Rockliffe (Christina Applegate) takes Christina on a road trip to Peter's sleepy California hometown in search of the man of her dreams. In the meantime, Christina's roommate, the just-dumped Jane Burns (Selma Blair), engages in her own lusty pursuits. Diaz and Applegate have great chemistry and are utterly believable as best friends. The script by Nancy M. Pimental, who wrote for South Park, blends raunchy humor and sentimentality, both of which are complimented by a healthy dose of sight gags. Directed by Roger Kumble (CRUEL INTENTIONS), THE SWEETEST THING is an amusing--albeit somewhat crude--look at what people will do for love. The film also features Jason Bateman in fine form as Peter's brother, indie queen Parker Posey as a bride-to-be, and a brief appearance by Applegate's real-life husband, actor Jonathan Schaech. So many fizzling gags that you’ll think you’re watching a failed fireworks display set off in a torrential downpour.

Derivative to the point of annoyance, it includes near copycat nods to Not Another Teen Movie, Scary Movie, American Pie -- anything in which yuk-'em-up sex jokes take center stage.

What this film really suffers from is a lack of inventive writing.

The rail-thin Christina bemoaning her 'saggy' 28-year-old breasts may be the most futile attempt at generating sympathy ever seen in movies.

Not so much a movie as an amiable collection of off-color vignettes. None of them soar, but some are well worth a giggle.

Director Roger Kumble offers just enough sweet and traditional romantic comedy to counter the crudity. And there's the inimitable Diaz, holding it all together.
