He works in an egg factory, likes to knock back a few too many beers, and is a single parent to 12-year old Molly (Madeline Carroll), a bright spitfire who does her best to keep her dad on the straight and narrow. Patriotic Molly insists that apathetic Bud do his civic duty and vote in the upcoming presidential election, a tight race between Republican incumbent Andrew Boone (Kelsey Grammer) and Democratic candidate Donald Greenleaf (Dennis Hopper). Soon the media and both candidates descend upon Bud's hometown of Texico, New Mexico, when it's determined that his vote wasn't counted and will decide the outcome of the entire presidential election. Now that Bud is a "somebody"--there's even a "Bud Cam" capturing his every move--will he be swayed by visits to Air Force One and the "Bud Ball" held in his honor, or will he be the voice of the American people and vote for the better candidate? The lengths the candidates go to in order to win Bud's vote are high points of the film, as they find themselves supporting initiatives that are completely opposed to their platforms at the urging of their campaign managers, played by Stanley Tucci and Nathan Lane. Grammer is well cast as Boone, and it's a hoot to see counterculture icon Hopper in this light. Costner makes Bud likable despite the loser stereotype he personifies. But this film belongs to Carroll, a lovely young actress who can steal a scene with one look. If nothing else, SWING VOTE is a reminder that even though politics may be a game, every single vote really does count. [More]

Swing Vote has a sharp, clever script, grown-up laughs and a background filled with skilled funny men -- Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammer and George Lopez.

Swing Vote is an amiable lug of a movie, part public service announcement, part political satire and part good-old-boy comedy with a spritz of sentiment hanging over the entire enterprise.

It's 2008. Why are we still microwaving Frank Capra's old casseroles? The movie turns racism, class woes, and social issues into jokes instead of engaging them with intelligence, wit, or a whiff of drama.

This politically driven writer wants to like any film where the basic message is "pay attention, people," but the critic in me can't give a movie with all the subtlety of a lead hammer a pass on thematic intentions alone.

Near the end, Bud admits that his situation used to be funny, but now it isn't any more. The same, alas, can be said of the movie as a whole.

[Y]ou almost want to hug Swing Vote... it's so cute in how it thinks... that one-man-one-vote really is something akin to, well, maybe nine innings of baseball on a glorious summer's day.

Swing Vote isn't going to be remembered as the best political comedy of our time, but it's not a bad showcase for Costner, and its heart and brain are both in something close to the right place.

Would be innocuous if it weren't so utterly, utterly misguided...a black comedy that doesn't know it's a black comedy.

Not counting [Kevin]Costner's cliche-ridden speech, the movie has a great make-you-think ending. If only the beginning, the middle and the basic premise were that profound.

As a political shaggy dog story, [it's] an entertaining diversion from the real life 2008 campaign. For moviegoers hungry for substance, that may not be enough.

If Swing Vote seems ridiculously improbable (and it is), then it might be best to remind yourself that the presidency coming down to the votes of just one county in Florida seemed far-fetched once upon a time, too.
