The Green Knight arrives at King Arthur court and challenges the brave warriors of the round table to trade ax blows with him. But no one accepts the magician's invitation, so, to save the honor of the court, the aging King agrees to take the challenge himself. But a spirited young squire named Gawain volunteers to champion the king and, after being knighted, takes the Green Knight's head clear off his shoulders. The headless knight rises, however, and proclaims that he will meet Gawain in one year to deliver his own deadly blow. In the meantime, he gives Gawain a riddle to solve -- the answer to which may save Gawain's life.
