A meta-American movie, a Godardian spoof of the whole genre, an attempt to see how stupid and insulting a motion picture can be and still be a big hit.
Sure makes you professional critics look ridiculous when you bash a film so badly only to have the viewing public (the people who actually spend their money on it and actually count in the big picture) really seem to love it and rate it highly. Makes you look like "theater snobs"...and snobs are out of touch with the real, everyday world.
That's the point Mark. The majority of American film goers are absolutely retarded, and they shell out their hard earned money for the dumbest of movies. I am GLAD I'm out of touch with the real, every-day world, if the 'real world' means sitting through garbage and spending my cash on movies that make me want to vomit. I'm sorry, I'll watch "The Master", and if that makes me a snob whose out of touch, I am 100% happy with that.
And no, the people who spend money are not the people who count in the long run. Nobody talks about film history and mentions "Tucker, The Man and His Dream" or "Summer of '57" even though they were blockbuster hits... people talk about "Lawrence of Arabia", "One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest" and "Gandhi", because those are the movies that actually stood as works of art over time. Money disappears pretty quick and the viewing public have no interest in upholding a film's merits for even a day (they'll just move on to the next 'trendy' thing)... it's the critics and film directors/writers who will carry their favorite films until the day they die. That's why more people know about "Citizen Kane" than they know about "How Green Was My Valley" even though the latter was a box-office stunner while the former didn't make as much money.
+2, Soham. There is a big difference between a good movie and a movie that does well in the box office, especially in the opening weekend. I highly doubt Taken 2 will even make $10 mil, 2 weekends from now.
The money a movie makes says absolutely nothing about what the public thought of it. We don't know for certain how good or bad a movie will be until we've spent our money, and at that point it's too late.
soham, if you're out of touch with the real world, than why the hell are you replying to a post on a website on the internet about a movie you probably didn't even see? Yeah there are alot of retarded people in this country that see movies, but there's alot more retarded people like you not paying attention to reality or the world. Did you know that there really is a sex slave trade and human trafficking worldwide business out there that brings in billions of dollars every year? You're the retard jackass, good day!
This movie is a sequel to Taken. If it did poorly in its opening weekend, then it was a failure of marketing, not the movie.
Time will tell if people actually liked the movie they spent their money on.
@geordie ironically you looked dumb by your comment, I think you belong to that dumb brain retards, yes avengers is overrated but it's good, same as TDKR. the only reason the avengers is a hit is because they actually made a pretty good job.
Thank god my friend plucked me and 2 others from our seats after 12 minutes, and coerced us to get our asses to the adjacent theater where LOOPER was just about to start.
I can't believe I just payed money to see that. The whole filmed must of been shot by someone with ADD. Invented a whole new style I call "Super Motion Blur" The OBVIOUS fake tear at the Embassy just threw it over-the-top. I also dug the lazy soundtrack with a pair of songs lifted from the movie "Drive" that are lazily recycled in two of the movie's key scenes.
CUT TO: CUT TO: CUT TO:
I always listen to people as articulate as you, Geordie. Seriously, has it occurred to you that there is a certain amount of escapism that people like? I'm sure they see many of the flaws others see, but they like the action. I'm also certain that most of the people that liked this also liked "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest" Personally, I could never stay awake long enough to know if I would have enjoyed "Citizen Kane". "Lawrence of Arabia" had it's dull moments, too. And don't even get me started on "Chariots of Fire", although, strangely, it held my interest.
arguing over a superhero make believe movie? you're the idiot now dumbness. Dark Knight rises was all about the occupy wallstreeters getting what they asked for, and although it was a great movie, it was a sign to what is on our own horizons in the real world.
Clearly you have issues if you think DKR was a better movie... SOOOOOO many plot holes, no charisma what so ever and basically, absolutely NO Batman, just a pussy wannabe superhero (which is NOT what Batman is)
Considering how good the original Taken was it amazes me how Neeson agreed to make such a below par sequel. Did he not read the script at all before signing on for it? Taken 2 is a good idea poorly executed, so now the door is open for another revenge themed story line? They will probably make another one, but leave the family out of it next time and for God's sake Liam read the script, you have enough star power to say "it's crap, re write it and i'll do it"!
you have a good point, however, if this 2nd movie had come out first, we'd all be saying "ah it's ok, but the 2nd one was just ok too". although, sequels hardly ever live up to the unexpected and pleasant surprise the first movie gave us.
why is salon.com doing movie reviews? And how is this guy even relevant in his review? How is this movie a spoof of anything? This guy sucks in his reviewing abilities and he is insulting to all of us
I did not go to this by choice. But it is the worst movie I have seen yet this year. Horrible amounts of smash cuts, couldn't even tell how he was killing half the dudes because it was so chopped up. Must have filmed this in one week. All of the character development was based on flashbacks. Uses one gun the entire movie and never runs out of ammo. His wife gets chained up but the assassin trained killer gets tied up with a piece of plastic. Soo many things that were completely ludicrous and not very well acted either. Terrible movie, not well thought out, horrible cinematography, I laughed more then once at the retardation. If I had to see this again you would have to pay me money.
this is brainless f**king shit. all the reviews say it is crap, nothing wrong with the reviewers here, just doing their job as they are sposed to.
its only 90 min picture as well, has no plot or character development time.
re- money making, it dropped 55% on its second weekend. if it increases the pace of its drops it will still turn a profit, but not a huge blockbuster at all as you need to have good holding power to be a blockbuster. so the movie going public didnt think it that good .
It was entertaining. I study everyday of the week, so when I have the chance to go at the movies, I try to forget all my work and just relax. I think some people should just chill out and enjoy things instead of trying too hard.
i love how he had his daughter lobbing grenades and not one cop showed up. not to mention they drove into the american embassy and almost killed all the guards and noone opened fire.

I am not sure who is more typical of the dumb down American masses: Mark Mason or Christ Smilich? Hopelessly predictable, sophistic comments
