A young woman, Félicie (Charlotte Véry), spends one magical summer with Charles (Frédéric Van Den Driessche), after which they exchange addresses, promising to find each other again. Five years later, Félicie is working at a beauty salon in Paris and raising Charles's daughter alone. Although she has two lovers--Maxcence (Michel Voletti), a salon owner who moves to Nevers in hopes of bringing Félicie and her daughter with him, and Loic (Hervé Furic), an intellectual and philosopher who engages Félicie in constant existential discussions--Félicie has never been able to forget Charles. This simple story about an indecisive young woman longing for her true love is eloquently depicted by Rohmer. The first few minutes are especially beautiful--a collage of short takes of Félicie and Charles during the summer that they fall in love. From there, Rohmer's glimpsing camera work continues: the street signs of Paris, the subtle decor inside a church, or Félicie's distraught expressions. Long dialogues about philosophy, specifically about Victor Hugo, are broken up by silly scenes featuring Félicie's cute daughter. One in Rohmer's series about the four seasons, (which includes A TALE OF SPRINGTIME, A SUMMER'S TALE, and AUTUMN TALE), A TALE OF WINTER is an emotional, spiritually rich film. [More]

At least part of the comic appeal of Mr. Rohmer's work is the complete confidence, clarity and decisiveness with which he dramatizes the utter confusion of his emotionally besieged heroines. Full Review |

A Rohmer film is a flavor that, once tasted, cannot be mistaken. Full Review |

Felicie's naive faith pulls the story along; so does the almost Capraesque hope that her absurd romantic prayer will come true. Full Review |

It's a small work, but nearly perfect. Full Review |
