Set against a luxurious Italian backdrop, Anthony Minghella's suspenseful film follows Tom Ripley (Matt Damon), a young New York men's room attendant, who is befriended by the father of a spoiled playboy, Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law). Dickie's father sends Tom to track down his wayward son in Venice and return him to his family in America. Tom, whose talents include forgery and impersonating voices, charms his way into the lives of Dickie and his girlfriend Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow), where he experiences first hand how the other half lives. Tom's immediate attraction to Dickie makes apparent his desire to be anyone but himself, and as the friendship develops, his true character begins to emerge. As Dickie grows tired and suspicious of his new acquaintance, Tom sees his new life slipping away. Unwilling to return to his old lifestyle, he takes extreme measures in order to ensure his place in the privileged world that he has grown to love. Establishing an intricate web of lies, Tom himself seems to forget what is real and what is not. [More]

Reviews for The Talented Mr. Ripley
The film is a little longer than it needs to be, but on balance, this is one of the sleekest, most involving mysteries to hit the big screen this year.
This is truly a rich, intelligent, masterfully tuned picture. If you love cinema, you'll adore The Talented Mr. Ripley.
[Minghella] certainly deserves kudos for including those stunning location shots as well as such incredibly haunting background music. And, of course, for casting the talented Mr. Damon.
If anybody can create sympathy for the devil, the angelic Matt Damon can.
Writer and director Anthony Minghella has adapted Patricia Highsmith's murder-mystery for the screen. It is a rigorous moral study of envy.
Minghella's -- and Damon's -- triumph here is in making Ripleys of us all.
A film Hitchcock would have been proud to make, which is as strong a compliment as one can give to Mingella's efforts in this uniformly first-rate, darkly chilling thriller.
Anthony Minghella, as in his last movie The English Patient, keeps the story going a good 15 or 20 minutes past its natural conclusion, but at least this time the story is more interesting.
Minghella, as he did with The English Patient, beautifully photographs this sweeping love story.
It's a sign of how watered-down the movie is that only the supporting actors have any bite.
The cast, particularly Law and Hoffman, turn in salary-raising performances.
You will walk out of [Ripley] unsure of your feelings about young Tom. You can be outraged by his lack of morality and shocked by his behavior, but deep down -- in that dark place only you can see -- you may find a spark of admiration.
Sumptuous, sensual, stately and twisted, it's a class act all the way.
Although the script, adapted by director Anthony Minghella from the Patricia Highsmith novel, sometimes teeters on the brink of believability, the strong acting and Minghella’s directorial restraint keep it safe from any risk of plummeting over the edge.
The effect doesn't linger too long after the end of the movie, but the classy psychological thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley is a twisted, taut and terrifying experience while it lasts.
