We emerge worn but wiser, having stepped, if only momentarily, and secondarily, into the shoes of the brutalized.

Reviews for Take My Eyes
(...) La directora evita que su película se convierta en un panfleto feminista o, lo que hubiese sido peor, una explotación sensacionalista.
This small, somber drama says things to battered women they probably already know. What it says to their abusers -- of any country or culture -- they can't afford to ignore.
Tosar retains a small level of sympathy even revealing himself as a monster and Marull blooms from nervous rabbit to assuredly attractive career woman.
The effective performances [in "Take my Eyes"] by Tosar and Marull keep you involved with Pilar’s plight and have you rooting for her to break free of Antonio.
Bollain keeps things muted and very natural, then allows the emotional resonance to blossom in scenes that are both beautiful and chilling.
What makes the movie fascinating is that it doesn't settle for a soap opera resolution to this story, with Pilar as the victim, Antonio as the villain, and evil vanquished. It digs deeper and more painfully.
If Take My Eyes explored how a woman could still feel for a man who abused her, it might have gripped us with its difficult truths.
Icíar Bollaín's Goya-winning Take My Eyes approaches the horror of domestic abuse from a uniquely critical angle.
Handles the subject of domestic violence with intelligence and compassion.
Wife-beating is a subject done to death but the deeply felt story and astonishing performances by the principal actress elevated this Goya-award-winning tale well above the rest.
The direction and performances acknowledge a lack of easy answers for these complex, flawed characters, while subtly indicting the roots of domestic violence in the Spanish culture of machismo.
Every element of the production is well-crafted. Take My Eyes is highly recommended.
For once, it makes sense that the battered wife always returns to the abusive spouse, even if we don't believe his promises ('I've changed') any more than hers ('I'm never going back').
The story isn't exactly new, but Bollain, an actress in her own right, keeps Take My Eyes from sinking into clichés.
Though deceptively straightforward in its exploration of the causes and effects of domestic abuse, Take My Eyes benefits from the grubby verisimilitude Bollaín brings to his material, which otherwise might have lapsed into movie-of-the-week superficiality
An uncommonly perceptive and balanced drama about a topic often treated in movies (especially thrillers) as a mere plot device.
