I don't think you understand what satire is. Family Guy just pokes fun at things from a liberal perspective, rather than being unbiased. That's not satire. You want an example of a "real satirical sitcom", look at South Park, which mocks everything and everyone.
I don't really like Family Guy (most of the writing is shit) however I did enjoy this movie. Possibly the most original and funny thing Seth MacFarlane has ever done.
I agree with your review. Ted was hilarious for about a 1/3 of the film, but everything else was slow, serious, boring, and/or predictable. **SPOILER** In fact, the car chase/kidnapping scenes felt unnecessary and tacked on as if they were there to just fill up the time. (And this is coming from someone who enjoys the humor of Family Guy/American Dad.)
This isn't an effing drama Private Pyle, if you want your raunchy comedies tied up into a neat little package and your movies to have fewer jokes then don't complain when the rest of us bring the bags of soap.
I agree the chase felt like laziness on the writers part, time wasted so they didn't have to think of anything truly funny/witty.
I am guessing those who thought this was awesome are the demographic that don't get half of Seth's jokes on Family Guy or American Dad.
They went in expecting less; the funny they are used to and didn't miss the witty because they normally miss it anyways.
Stuff they are too young to get.
A half hour of American Dad and/or Family Guy has had more inside jokes or double funnies then this entire flick did for me.
The Flash Gordon character was way overused too.
Those who do not enjoy his references to characters and trends from the 70 & 80's wouldn't notice the lack of diversity.
I went in expecting no real plot or storyline and walked away feeling like the film actually took itself too seriously in that department.
Too much time was spent under the guise of developing a weak predictable plot.
The film didn't take advantage of the extra time given instead it didn't know what to do with it.
Seth's stuff usually has a couple layers of funny, each line well thought out and valuable.
From what I can tell, this movie appeals to those who only 'see' the first layer of Seth's stuff anyways.
It was funny for those who find Family Guy funny for the in your face fart jokes only.
PS. Mila Kunlis' character as the GF was thoroughly selfish and unlikable to me.
A final slap in the face was expecting me to see her as some sort of heroin at the end.
I really wanted her to get hit by a bus.
Two people walked out during the middle of the movie. That seemed overly harsh to me but no not everyone liked it.
A horse's behind by any other name is still a a horse's behind. Call MacFarlane's humor "layered, complex, intelligent" or whatever else you want but at the end of the day it's still cheap, cynical, and hateful humor with a liberal twist.
Anybody can write the humor that MacFarlane and his cronies write but not everybody has friends in Hollywood who will pay them big time money to do it.
So this is depressing. Ted at the top spot with a fresh score. Latest Tyler Perry dreck at #4. Abraham Lincoln getting panned because critics can't take it when their goofy concepts have a straight face. The pure concentrated pretension of Moonrise Kingdom taking $4.9 million. Prometheus not even cracking an 80%. Oliver Stone continuing an absolutely depressing swan dive. And to top it off, critics just love Katy Perry.
I guess "Top Critic" equals "Failed Actor/Screenwriter". Hey if you can't do it just criticize those that can. If you didn't find this funny from start to finish you don't have a humorous bone in your entire body. But judging from that haircut, you do have a little sense of humor. Go see it again and this time try not to laugh.
I don't understand why people are jumping down the critics throat.
Find a critic you agree with and trust their reviews.
I agree with this critics overall assessment.
I was REALLY looking forward to this movie too.
I could have saved 45 bucks and waited for it to go on DVD.
Not everyone likes the same 'things' that is why we need many critics.
Find one you agree with and don't waste your time with those you don't.
The entire world does not actually revolve around what YOU think is entertaining.
Thank you for being the voice of reason. People have not realized this for many years. There are going to be those who enjoy the film even when half of America does not like the film; just the way the world works. I have not seen this movie yet, so i reserve judgement until i do.
I never agree with just one critic. I look at many critics & users reviews, then I come up with a general consensus. Kind of like what this site does anyway, but it helps with decided what games to play and what T.V shows to watch. For most movies, I don't even care to see anything with at least an 85 percent meter. But for comedies, I keep to to around 70-75, simply because genuinely good comedy movies are hard to come by and seeing one with over 50 % seems like a godsend. Why are you so angry by the fact Mila Kunis was shown as a hero in parts? Are you only satisfied with the steroetypes a woman should be in films? The nagging bitch, the football loving tom-boy, the one who got away? Just because something isn't what you expected doesn't mean it is automatically bad!
i agree, but i loved this film. For me it doesn't matter how long the ride is, it is how enjoyable. Even though you're right I still found the movie funny throughout.
