Weinstein & Warner Bros. to Deliver All-New CG "Turtles"
Variety reports on an arrangement between WB and the Weinstein boys that will return the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" to the silver screen. The new movie, which will be done all-CGI and with a semi-dark PG-level "edge," will be written and directed by animation veteran Kevin Munroe, in close consultation with original "Turtles" co-creator Peter Laird.
The crime-fighting, wise-cracking, pizza-loving ninjatic reptiles have starred in comic books, video games, cartoon series, and a trilogy of New Line movies in the early 90's -- but the Weinsteins and the Warners want to bring a new slant to the story.
"Reintroducing the Ninja Turtles in an animated movie will enable the filmmakers to fully realize the adventure and humor of the property," says Mr. Weinstein, while WB Jeff Robinov takes it a step further: "We think that a new generation of kids will love discovering 'Turtles,' especially supported by the enthusiasm of fans of the original movies, comicbooks and TV shows."
This new-fangled version of the kooky ol' turtlefest is expected to hit theaters in early 2007.

South_park300 writes: on Jul 18 2005 10:09 AM nah, it should be ok. if they are getting the co-creator of the turtles to help out, it should be great, especially if they are going for a much darker tone. kids have already "re-discovered" the turtles with the new show, toys, games, etc, so with this movie, it will be a.... "RE-re-discovery" ? to me, the first truly mediocre CG movie already happened, and it was called Ice Age. followed by Shark Tale, followed by Robots (Reply to this) |

Ssillississ writes: on Jul 18 2005 12:02 PM Could Be Interesting With Peter Laird involved in this project we could have ourselves a winner here. Most of you probably don't remember the original comic book. This wasn't kiddy-fare - it was an exceptionally entertaining mag. So if they try to dumb it down for the kiddies it will stink...but if they are able to tread the line of a dark and gritty well written TNMT similar to the original comic it could be VERY interesting. And with a 5 year old daughter who's favorite thing right now is TNMT I'm really looking forward to this one. Ya, CG Movies hit serious lows with Shark Tale and Ice Age.... (I think Ice Age 2 may be a sign of the apocolypse) (Reply to this) |

saiyajinX writes: on Jul 20 2005 11:52 AM In reply to this comment (#824311) here's the thing. The original MANGA for the series was incredibaly dark and very violent!! Forget some of the comics and shit. If Laird digs deep enough hoepfully they can make a good film based off of those manga instead of thrashing this into a kiddy filck. I love the fact that they are going to get kinda dark with it, and hopefully they will go back to original story lines and not all of this messed up garbage they have been producing. Ophiuchus writes: on Jul 21 2005 04:32 AM Yeah, Scrat the sabre-tooth squirrel was the best thing since sliced green bread. Ice Age was OK, but not particularly memorable. It was a bit too similar to Shrek for my liking (crabby big guy reluctantly paired with weirdo chatterbox, goes on quest- also reluctantly). I remember Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from when I was a kid; to whit, the animated TV series. I even had a pair of socks with the orange-wearing Turtle on it (I forget which one that is). I kinda liked it. Can't remember it too well, though. (Reply to this) |
