It is itself a mutant of sorts, a contentious, unsightly hybrid of martial-arts exploitation film and live-action cartoon.

A live-action version of the popular animated TV series for kids. Due to radiation exposure, the four turtles have mutated into teenagers; now, they live in the New York City sewers, where they eat pizza, talk jive, and learn the tricks of a ninja from their guru, Splinter the Rat. When a group of juvenile delinquents called the Foot Gang start wreaking havoc in the city, our heroes on the half-shell join forces with an intrepid girl reporter to put an end to the gang's evil ways. Reviews for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Movie
Four pizza-loving turtles emerge from their shells to battle crime in this inexplicably successful kiddie flick, which now looks as dated as it is silly.
Maintains an effective balance between the kiddie toon and the more subtle comics it was based on. Koteas is miscast, though.
Panderingly kid-centric and obnoxious commercialism at its most profitable.
Entertaining enough to gloss over the crassness of its underpinnings.
By no means exceptional, but you have to admire the turtle performers for their agility, and Elia Corteas for keeping a straight face.
The Heroes in a Half-Shell, as they are known, have a built-in following, so movies like this are notoriously lazy. None of the budget seems to go to screenwriters with talent. It is instead spent on, er . . . creature comforts.
Parents can vaguely console themselves, however, that amid the kiddie pollution available on Saturday morning TV, the Turtles rank slightly better than the rest.
Let us not contemplate the sorts of lustful images that must run through the mind of a hormonal teen-age turtle.
Cowabunga!! Try making turtle soup out of these butt-kicking raucous reptiles. It's pure giddy excitement!
Between the dubbed dialogue and the dark visuals, the cumulative effect is curiously dislocating.
