But he strikes a bargain with a fellow captive, the tubercular Mangeot: Mangeot will take Chavel's place in front of the firing squad if Chavel will give his entire estate to Mangeot's sister and mother. Three years later, after the liberation of France, Chavel goes back to see his old home, now in the hands of Mangeot's family. He keeps his identity a secret from them, but discovers that Mangeot's sister Therese harbors a deep hatred for him. Nonetheless, he stays on as a gardener, and eventually falls in love with Therese.
