Christian Bale's Best Movies
He's been Batman, Bateman, and battled Terminators -- and this weekend, Christian Bale battles Woody Harrelson for the fate of Casey Affleck in Out of the Furnace, the latest eminently well-cast drama from Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper. In honor of Bale's latest cinematic excursion, we decided to take this opportunity to pause for a fond look back at some of the brighter critical highlights from an acclaimed career that's still collecting them at an impressive pace. It's time for Total Recall!

RT on DVD & Blu-Ray: Terminator Salvation and a Smithsonian Battle
Pickings are indeed slim this week for new releases on home video. While we have the requisite new releases, which include a couple of major pictures that opened earlier this year (Terminator Salvation and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian) and a couple of lesser-known flicks (Paper Heart and A Christmas Tale), the offerings were decidedly lacking in terms of special editions and newly packaged items. As such, we've decided to profile a handful of Blu-Ray reissues of films we already know and love (well, most of us, anyway), like Gremlins, The Mask of Zorro, and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Check out our complete list and see what tickles your fancy this week!

Why Terminator Salvation Isn't a Terminator Film
We know the critics don't care for "Terminator Salvation" -- and audiences don't like it as much as the new "Night at the Museum" -- but according to ScreenCrave's Krystal Clark, the problem isn't that it's a bad movie...it's that it isn't really a "Terminator" movie.

Jen Gets Terminated, Day 4: Terminator Salvation
It's been a roller coaster ride revisiting the science fiction films Terminator (1984), Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003), and I thank everyone who followed along with me this week. As we found out, the franchise that James Cameron began 25 years ago weathered a lot of changes through the years (from $6.5 million thriller to $200 million action pic, from Arnold Schwarzenegger's first "I'll be back" to "Talk to the hand") but what kept fans hooked from picture to picture were the core themes of the Terminator universe: humanity attempting to save itself, the strength of familial bonds, and the idea that we're all in control of our own fates -- even if the future seems rather bleak.

Critics Consensus: Terminator, Night Are So-So Sequels
This week at the movies, we've got deadly machines (Terminator Salvation, starring Christian Bale and Sam Worthington); historical hysterics (Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, starring Ben Stiller and Amy Adams); and dance fever (Dance Flick, starring Damon and Craig Wayans). What do the critics have to say? With Terminator Salvation, director McG has brought the venerable sci-fi/action series back to the screen, with plenty of chases, explosions, and yes, machines. But critics say he's forgotten the key ingredient that made the originals so compelling -- the human factor. Christian Bale is John Connor, leading the human resistance against Skynet, which has conquered our dystopian planet with its armies of Terminators.

Jen Gets Terminated, Day 2: Terminator 2: Judgment Day
When James Cameron debuted his first real feature film in 1984 -- directing Piranha II: The Spawning for hire didn't really count -- he turned out a $6.5 million science fiction horror flick called The Terminator that became a commercial and critical hit. (It remains at 100 percent on the Tomatometer to this day.) Ten years later, Cameron returned to the Terminator saga with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, a $100 million spectacle that made landmark advances in special effects technology and earned the title of most expensive movie ever made, a gamble that paid off in spades. But is Terminator 2: Judgment Day also the best movie sequel of all time?

Jen Gets Terminated, Day One: The Terminator
Ryan followed Bond. Alex did Jason. Tim got Kirk, Spock, and Bones. This week, I've been assigned to follow...The Terminator! In the latest Rotten Tomatoes watching series, yours truly will take on the famous futuristic cyborg in all four of its cinematic incarnations, from James Cameron's titular 1984 sci-fi horror classic to this Thursday's fourquel, in which director McG will show us his version of the future according to SkyNet. Watch and read along with me as I revisit the Terminator franchise, watching one movie a day, leading up to RT's Judgment Day -- May 21, when Terminator: Salvation lands in theaters.

Exclusive: The Look of Terminator Salvation with Martin Laing
Production Designer Martin Laing has worked with James Cameron on True Lies, Titanic and Ghosts of the Abyss and has served on films like The Haunting, City of Ember and the upcoming Clash of the Titans. Terminator Salvation, with its bleak view of the future, is easily his most ambitious project to date. On the eve of the film's worldwide rollout, he sits down exclusively with RT to take us through concept art for the film and explain his approach... "Our Terminator world is quite different from the films you've seen before. In the same way that Warner Bros. took the Batman movies and turned them on their head, in design terms as well as the story, and turned that world into something very dark and really really cool, we're going to be doing the same thing with Terminator."

Cannes 2009: The Battle for Terminator 5
The Terminator franchise faces a potentially rocky future, according to a report published by Variety that predicts a bidding war for the rights to future installments. Terminator Salvation - which hits our screens in the coming weeks - is distributed by Warner Bros. in the US and Sony for international territories. However production company Halcyon owns the rights themselves and, according to the trades, they have a deal in place with rival studio MGM that gives them a 30-day right to first refusal to finance and distribute a Salvation sequel.

Exclusive: McG Talks Terminator Salvation
The news that one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time was to get a full-fat reboot predictably sent cyborg fanboys into paroxysms of joy. For about 10 minutes. That Arnie, otherwise engaged running the world's fourth largest economy, wouldn't be back was partly compensated for by the casting of Christian Bale. But the revelation that McG was to be at the helm of Terminator Salvation put an abrupt stop to the celebrations. Recently, though, the tide's been turning with trailers and longer assemblages revealing a gritty war movie with more in common with Mad Max and Children of Men than Charlie's Angels. RT talked exclusively to the much-maligned McG about the rise of his machines...
