TESORO MIO, based on the true life story of Carlos Dietrich, a lowly bank clerk who embezzles a large amount of money from a local branch of Banco de Argentina, pays more attention to the crushing banality and petty jealousies of provincial Argentinean life than the actual crime. Gabriel Goity plays Dietrich with a heartbreaking mixture of cuckolded disgust and suburban ennui, muddling through his loveless marriage, passionless infidelity, painfully boring bank job and hopeless prospects. Like a sublimated and suburban version of Al Pacino's fantastically frustrated bank robber in DOG DAY AFTERNOON, TESORO MIO's protagonist experiences a slow emotional breakdown that will lead him to his desperate act of rebellion, attempting to free himself from the numbing restraints of his unremarkable life. With a slow, solipsistic meander, TESORO MIO traces Dietrich's blossoming intolerance, increasingly incited at every turn by the subtle but constant bombardment of gossip, demands, revenge and corruption of his family and friends. The film's dusky and putrid art direction lends physical form to the protagonist's metaphysical malaise, and as the film builds to a crescendo of crippling disappointment, the resulting crime seems almost an afterthought. This film screened in New York City in May 2001 as part of the Recent Argentine Cinema film festival (Passionate Stories--a Passion for Storytelling) organized by the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
