The Baker Reviews
March 8, 2013
This cute and quirky movie was an unexpected treat. Damien Lewis was excellent as "the baker" a hit man trying to reform. And the cast of characters made this movie that much more enjoyable.

Straight to DVD releases are nothing to be afraid of, since many of them turn out to be gems. Unfortunately, "The Baker" isn't one of them. The blame can be laid in many places, but the cast isn't one of them. They're simply not given enough to work with, and the film loses steam right where it should be picking it up. Dispite all of this, there are some pretty amusing moments, so fans of the genre will probably get some enjoyment out of it. Aside from that, the film isn't likely to find a home with most.

To hell with all the negative reviews, and there are only 6 here, so not a fair fight for this little, unknown and an underrated flick. Many awkward characters and situations came together to produce a decent enough entertainer. Though the "gay" part didn't quite fit well in the larger scheme of things, for me at least, but I could overlook the transgression to enjoy what the rest of the movie had to offer. In the end, I wasn't too pleased with the movie, but wasn't disappointed a bit either. All in all, a decent effort, with moderate amount of laughs and Mr. Damian's charm. Liked it.

Funny, quirky, British humor, more clever than I thought it would be. If you don't like British comedies with a small town sense of humor - why are you reading this review? It's not for you.

Gareth Lewis's debut feature film is a very pleasant, stylish and feel-good picture. The music is excellent, the cast is terrific (Lewis, Ashfield, Dwyfor, O'Donnell, Speirs, Coster-Waldau, Gambon and Cowen) and the atmosphere really memorable. I watched it twice and the second time I liked it even more than the first time - plus, there were still things left to discover.

It's great acting as well.
An amazing British movie! I laughed so hard with this. This is something no American movie can ever be.

I love the quirky cuteness. The bakery was adorable and the characters were just wacky enough.

It has Damian Lewis so it should be good, right? Nope. It does have its moments, but they are generally overshadowed by the sickening cutesiness.

Like "Death At A Funeral" this movie takes a dark them and suspends disbelief using dry humor, likable characters, heart and theme of romance and redemption. This is not really an assassin movie. It's a dry british comedy that's enjoyable and lets you escape into the idea that there are still small towns like this, where you can start yourself over without all the "noise" of our lives.

A really good idea that needed more time in development. I felt it was suitable to a short rather than a feature so there was a lot of dead space where they hadn't thought of anything decent to put in it. It was good, and had some really good moments but it's not worthy of being called a feature.

aka Assassin in Love. Hit man wants out, becomes baker in small Welsh village. Pretty predictable.

This movie is also called Assassin in Love..........The English do this sort of thing right. Great quirky characters, the kind you'll never see in an American movie. I loved it for the same reasons I loved Death at a Funeral (the english version directed by Frank Oz of all people) If you like this kind of offbeat stuff, you'll love this. Fantastic fun movie!!
