Author Sir Martin Gilbert hosts this account of Israel's first years as an independent nation. On May 14, 1948, one day after Israel declared sovereignty, the nation was invaded by Lebanon, Syria, Transjordan, Egypt and Iraq. Through rare footage, photographs and interviews with those who participated in the War of Independence, this program chronicles the struggles -- and captures the harsh realities -- of a fledgling nation at war.

Audience Reviews for The Birth of a Nation

Yes, I liked this a lot-I don't know why but it eas done in such a way you just want to keep on watching. Brilliant film. The subject matter is of course problematic. The soldier and his "struggles" are the main focus of the film and his alleigance to the Ku Klux Klan is offered as a necessary response to events. This is done well. From the first part of the film, you sympathise with him. Towards the end of the film you don't at all. When he joins the Klan, imediatly I was shocked. Not because his sudden change of heart but because it's not something we're familar with today at all. The images of the Klan racing through the fields and clearly wanting to over power the blacks, was startling but shot in one amazing way.
Birth of a Nation's budget was $110,99- at this point in cinema history a staggeringeringly large amount of money to spend on the production of a film.
As a piece of cinema Birth Of A Nation is authetic and spectacular. we see thousands of different shot-set ups, sophisticated cross-editing and a compplex musical score. Absolutly brilliant!
The dramatic and dynamic tension between the images on screen and the music great an epic of a film. It uses cut-ins to promote the symbolic potential of objects and advances the cause-and-effect narrative dynamic. The visual expericnce amazed and engaed audiences.
Overall, a great film which probably isn't for everyone but a must see for all film fans,
Highly recomended!
