Critics Consensus: The Croods is Charming and Funny

Summary

This week at the movies, we've got a stone-age family (The Croods, with voice work by Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone); secret servicemen (Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart); an Ivy League application reader (Admission, starring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd); and girls gone wild (Spring Breakers, starring Selena Gomez and James Franco). I never said it may be the best animated film of the year ( I doubt it will), I said its look like the first animated film of the year that may be worth seeing.

If Croods and Turbo fail, then the only other way Dreamworks will survive is by making sequels to their box office hits.

To be honest, ever since they announced their plan to have at least 2-3 animated films released per year I've been worried that they're going with quantity over quality. I think this plan is going to start backfiring on them. Seeing a new dreamworks film no longer feels like an event when you've got three getting released in a single year.

Right now, they're thriving on their franchises, but so far they haven't had a non-sequel perform really well since How to Train Your Dragon three years ago and I'm not sure The Croods and Turbo are going to change that.

Don't forget, Ryan Reynolds is in both The Croods and Turbo...and he started the whole "Supposed to be a huge Star" Box office Flop a whole 2 years before Taylor Kitsch did.

But Ryan Reynolds is still a popular actor, people could say "oh he's the guy from Green Lantern or oh he's the guy who played Deadpool!" not saying that those movies were good.
Taylor Kitsch would of became a big star if John Carter was box office smash and had better word of mouth and if Battleship made a lot of money to ensure that Kitsch was in at least two big box office hits in under a year, but that never happened.

Don't forget the Savages flop! Kitsch was awful in that film too. I don't see how Kitsch and Reynolds are very Different. THE CHANGE UP! Surely Reynolds can earn HUGE money with a Raunchy R just like Bradly Cooper! Box Office Flop, Critics Hated it. Green Lantern, The Start of a Whole new Franchise of epic super hero Proportions! Critical Flop (worst super hero movie ever made) and Box Office Disaster. How's this for a conspiracy, they both are linked to the abomination that is Wolverine Origins a Canadian super hero WHICH IS Where Both Actors are From! Canada! ALSO FROM CANADA MICHAEL CERA WHO SINGLE HANDEDLY RUINED SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD!!! We are through the looking glass here people.

Not surprised to see the reviews for Croods drop to just barely above the positive level. While it stayed in the upper 70s lower 80s for quite awhile, most positive reviews were along the lines of "kids will love it, adults will stand it", so it was inevitable that the score would fall. Too bad, given how amazing the directors' last two films were. Might check it out when it hits the home market but I'm in no rush to see it.

I was honestly expecting reviews for Olympus has Fallen to be much worse. It'll be interesting to see how White House Down will fare given how similair the premises is (given that it's from Roland Emmerich it'll probably fare worse with critics but be the bigger hit at the box office).

The Weitz brothers really need to start doing their films together again as ever since they went their seperate ways, their films just haven't been the same.

When it is a action thriller or a Sci-Fi story, look at the trailers they will tell you, what you are going to like about it...then there are the films that you need critics to tell you what they are about, the trailers are no help...I'm on my way this morning to see Olympus has fallen...and tuesday go see the Croods...Spring breakers I will miss it at the theatre and the DVD...and if both Olympus..and Croods are enjoyable...their DVD's are in my future

The Croods look's like the classic All old people are wrong story line of DreamWorks. Honestly the only insulting thing about the story is our Young Heroine Breaks the schackles of her parental male figure only to dive into the chains of another Male figure to control her life all in 90 minutes! Bleh

Olympus has fallen came out first, take that Channing Tatum.

Admission...can we all Admit Paul Rudd is in shitty movies...please.

Spring Breakers, I honestly don't know what to say about this movie. I'm shocked it's not rotten based what it's being marketed as but so many people say this writer/director is great and James Franco is amazing. meh, rental.

How in the hell did Chris Sanders (Lilo & Stitch, How To Train Your Dragon) end up being partnered with Kirk DeMicco (Quest For Camelot, Space Chimps) to create such an obvious piece of pedestrian cinema?

What about Die Hard, Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2, M:I Ghost Protocol, The Raid, The Matrix, Dark Knight Rises, Road Warrior, District 9, Kill Bill Vol.1, Hot Fuzz...I can name more, but I think you get the gist. Sure, there are a ton of forgettable action movies, but there are, like any genre, gems.
