Critics Consensus: The Croods is Charming and Funny

Plus, Olympus Has Fallen is action-packed but silly, Admission meanders, and Spring Breakers is wild and crazy.

This week at the movies, we've got a stone-age family (The Croods, with voice work by Nicolas Cage and Emma Stone); secret servicemen (Olympus Has Fallen, starring Gerard Butler and Aaron Eckhart); an Ivy League application reader (Admission, starring Tina Fey and Paul Rudd); and girls gone wild (Spring Breakers, starring Selena Gomez and James Franco). What do the critics have to say?

The Croods

69%

Picking up where The Flintstones left off, The Croods is a comedy adventure about a Stone Age family. And critics say that while the storytelling in this animated feature isn't highly evolved, it's sweet, funny, and visually inventive. After the cave they call home is destroyed, a stone-age family journeys across its pre-historic environs, encountering wild beasts and learning to love and trust each other along the way. The pundits say The Croods lacks sharply-drawn characters, but it's charming and exciting enough to delight both kids and their parents. (Check out this week's 24 Frames for a look at the history of DreamWorks animation, as well as this week's Total Recall, in which we count down Nicolas Cage's best-reviewed movies.)

Olympus Has Fallen

48%

Is Olympus Has Fallen an enjoyable, over-the-top action flick or a jingoistic Die Hard ripoff? Well, it depends on which critic you ask. Gerard Butler stars as a disgraced secret service agent who's called into action when the president (Aaron Eckhart) is held hostage in the White House by a group of ruthless terrorists. The pundits are pretty split on Olympus Has Fallen: some say it's action-packed escapist fun, while others find it to be an excessively violent, by-the-numbers thriller. (Check out director Antoine Fuqua's Five Favorite Films.)

Admission

43%

Tina Fey and Paul Rudd in a romantic comedy? Sounds like a sure thing. Unfortunately, critics say the likable leads can only do so much with Admission's meandering script. Fey stars as a Princeton admissions officer burdened by the stresses of her romantic and professional life. She takes a road trip to see an old college classmate (Rudd) who's now an unconventional teacher with a gifted but eccentric student who could use some help getting into college. The pundits say Admission is slight stuff, and though the fine cast keeps things watchable, the film veers unevenly between drama and comedy without finding a consistent tone.

Spring Breakers

66%

Director Harmony Korine (Gummo) is known for pushing boundaries, but with Spring Breakers, he's made something approximating a mainstream movie. Critics say it's a pretty good fit; Spring Breakers is often debauched and trashy, but it's also visceral and hypnotic. Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens play members of a group of college girls who head to Florida to party but quickly get into trouble after meeting a rapper/criminal (James Franco). The pundits say Spring Breakers is undeniably lurid and occasionally monotonous, but it's also thrilling and wildly unconventional. (Check out our interview with Korine here.)

Also opening this week in limited release:

  • Gimme The Loot, a drama about a pair of graffiti artists looking to raise funds for a bold act of tagging, is at 100 percent.
  • My Brother The Devil, a drama about a pair of siblings who each find themselves drawn into the world of London's street gangs, is at 100 percent.
  • 108 (Cuchillo de palo), a documentary about gay rights in Paraguay, is at 100 percent.
  • The Sapphires, a musical dramedy about a Australian Aboriginal soul group, is Certified Fresh at 92 percent.
  • Eden, starring Jamie Chung in a drama about a woman abducted into a human trafficking ring, is at 85 percent.
  • Starbuck, a comedy about a fourtysomething slacker who discovers he's fathered hundreds of children through sperm back donations, is at 63 percent.
  • Hunky Dory, starring Minnie Driver in a comedy about a high school drama teacher who attempts to stage a glam rock version of The Tempest, is at 58 percent.
  • Come Out And Play, starring Vinessa Shaw in a horror film about a young couple on vacation who discover a band of possessed children, is at 50 percent.
  • Everybody Has a Plan, starring Viggo Mortensen in a drama about a man who assumes the identity of his dead brother and finds himself in the midst of criminality, is at 20 percent.
  • Love And Honor, starring Liam Hemsworth and Teresa Palmer in a drama about a soldier who goes AWOL to win back the girl who dumped him, is at 14 percent.

"Spring Breakers" for the win, and just in time for today, the first day of Spring.

Some of the limited films look good, but I don't much about them. The comedies (Starbuck, The Sapphires) look enjoyable, while "Gimmie the Loot", "My Brother the Devil" and "Eden" are ones I'll have to take note of till their home video release. I'm a sucker for any Viggo film, and, you have to admit, 50% is a pretty good rating for a horror film, even one that looks like a rip-off of "Village of the Damned" (or "Children of the Corn" if you're really pessimistic).

Wow! I can't believe SPRING BREAKERS appeals the most to me. I mean, most of the marketing was about those girls in bikinis the whole time. And Korine has been hit-or-miss to me. But I'll trust the critics on this one. THE CROODS doesn't look that good, OLYMPUS just looks bad, and Fey and Rudd haven't been in that many good movies (a lot of the ones with fresh ratings say that these 2 save them), which is why ADMISSION may work but the trailer didn't make me laugh. Oh, and LOVE & HONOR looks cheesy as Hell.

Which movie is beyond worse: A Good Day to Die Hard or Olympus Has Fallen?

Probably Die Hard because it has a legacy to preserve, which it didnt. On the other hand, Olympus Has Fallen is just another forgettable action movie.

What about Die Hard, Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2, M:I Ghost Protocol, The Raid, The Matrix, Dark Knight Rises, Road Warrior, District 9, Kill Bill Vol.1, Hot Fuzz...I can name more, but I think you get the gist. Sure, there are a ton of forgettable action movies, but there are, like any genre, gems.

Agree, they are doomed. Keep releasing crap that only kiddies wanna see and adults don't even wanna take their kids to. Then again there are a lot of dumb adults these days so I can only speak for myself. But entertainment has certainly gotten embarassing bereft of taste and style.

If Croods and Turbo fail, then the only other way Dreamworks will survive is by making sequels to their box office hits.

To be honest, ever since they announced their plan to have at least 2-3 animated films released per year I've been worried that they're going with quantity over quality. I think this plan is going to start backfiring on them. Seeing a new dreamworks film no longer feels like an event when you've got three getting released in a single year.

Right now, they're thriving on their franchises, but so far they haven't had a non-sequel perform really well since How to Train Your Dragon three years ago and I'm not sure The Croods and Turbo are going to change that.

Brad and Netflix

Don't forget, Ryan Reynolds is in both The Croods and Turbo...and he started the whole "Supposed to be a huge Star" Box office Flop a whole 2 years before Taylor Kitsch did.

Mar 22 - 09:00 AM

Matthew R.

Matthew Reimer

But Ryan Reynolds is still a popular actor, people could say "oh he's the guy from Green Lantern or oh he's the guy who played Deadpool!" not saying that those movies were good.
Taylor Kitsch would of became a big star if John Carter was box office smash and had better word of mouth and if Battleship made a lot of money to ensure that Kitsch was in at least two big box office hits in under a year, but that never happened.

Mar 22 - 08:54 PM

Brad and Netflix

Bradly Martin

Don't forget the Savages flop! Kitsch was awful in that film too. I don't see how Kitsch and Reynolds are very Different. THE CHANGE UP! Surely Reynolds can earn HUGE money with a Raunchy R just like Bradly Cooper! Box Office Flop, Critics Hated it. Green Lantern, The Start of a Whole new Franchise of epic super hero Proportions! Critical Flop (worst super hero movie ever made) and Box Office Disaster. How's this for a conspiracy, they both are linked to the abomination that is Wolverine Origins a Canadian super hero WHICH IS Where Both Actors are From! Canada! ALSO FROM CANADA MICHAEL CERA WHO SINGLE HANDEDLY RUINED SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD!!! We are through the looking glass here people.

Not surprised to see the reviews for Croods drop to just barely above the positive level. While it stayed in the upper 70s lower 80s for quite awhile, most positive reviews were along the lines of "kids will love it, adults will stand it", so it was inevitable that the score would fall. Too bad, given how amazing the directors' last two films were. Might check it out when it hits the home market but I'm in no rush to see it.

I was honestly expecting reviews for Olympus has Fallen to be much worse. It'll be interesting to see how White House Down will fare given how similair the premises is (given that it's from Roland Emmerich it'll probably fare worse with critics but be the bigger hit at the box office).

The Weitz brothers really need to start doing their films together again as ever since they went their seperate ways, their films just haven't been the same.

When it is a action thriller or a Sci-Fi story, look at the trailers they will tell you, what you are going to like about it...then there are the films that you need critics to tell you what they are about, the trailers are no help...I'm on my way this morning to see Olympus has fallen...and tuesday go see the Croods...Spring breakers I will miss it at the theatre and the DVD...and if both Olympus..and Croods are enjoyable...their DVD's are in my future

The Croods look's like the classic All old people are wrong story line of DreamWorks. Honestly the only insulting thing about the story is our Young Heroine Breaks the schackles of her parental male figure only to dive into the chains of another Male figure to control her life all in 90 minutes! Bleh

Olympus has fallen came out first, take that Channing Tatum.

Admission...can we all Admit Paul Rudd is in shitty movies...please.

Spring Breakers, I honestly don't know what to say about this movie. I'm shocked it's not rotten based what it's being marketed as but so many people say this writer/director is great and James Franco is amazing. meh, rental.
