Sometimes, looking good isn't enough.
REALLY? Wow, I found the story to be very purposeful and honest. And how quickly you forget, it's not "a long time ago" it's "LOS ANGELES... once upon a time..." It's a fairy tale! And awesome delight of one too. A grown-ups story visualized by both the man telling it and the 5 year old imagining it. That's why to your imagination-lacking mind it 'didn't make sense'. This was a FILM, not a popcorn flick. I and seemingly everyone else in the theater though it was amazing as the clapping hands noted at the end. LOVED IT!

The reviewer has misunderstood the film. The story (and the images associated with it) is not a narrative a la The Princess Bride. It is about the relationship that grows between a broken man and a broken girl. The images evoke the emotions of the characters, not plot points.
It is unfortunate that so many reviewers writing about this movie are near illiterate when it comes to the poetic, image-based language of film.
