Five Favorite Films with Ray Stevenson

The Kill the Irishman star also talks about working with Christopher Walken.

Ray Stevenson has starred as a soldier in the HBO series Rome, and has a comic-book anti-hero in The Punisher: War Zone. Now he's got another lead role, this time as Irish mobster Danny Greene, in the new film Kill the Irishman. We got the chance to talk to him about the film, and of course, we asked him to tell us about five of his favorite movies. Although he admitted it would be hard to narrow it down to five, "I'm a Gemini - it's like asking what side of toast to butter. Bloody hell, ask me to solve world peace!" We also talked to him about working with Christopher Walken, and whether or not he'd return to Rome in the future.

Point Blank (1967, 95% Tomatometer)

Lee Marvin... That's a great movie. It kind of sets the benchmark, I think. It kind of puts it up there, because you really engage. And also every part is so well-written. Angie Dickenson... from the female roles to the male roles, the parts are so well drawn. And yet there's a danger to it, there's a rawness to it. It's like an expose of that world, you know?

Bullitt (1968, 97% Tomatometer)

I've got to say Bullitt. Just the coolest guy on the planet [laughing]. The chase scene... when they get burned out in that wreck in the end and that car horn is going... That's moviemaking, a great piece.

Queen Margot (1994, 77% Tomatometer)

It's Daniel Auteuil, Isabel Adjani... It's such an incredible piece. It takes place ostensibly in Paris around the time of the massacre of the Protestants by the Catholic ruling family. Basically under the auspices of bringing them in, in the guise of a joint wedding that's going to unite the Huguenots and the royal class, and this massacre takes place. And it's dirty, and you can almost smell the clothes, and it's just so well done. It's a great story, and I just love watching it.

The Fountain (2006, 51% Tomatometer)

I really enjoyed The Fountain, just because it appeals to another side of me [laughing]. The shamanistic, esoterical side.

Where Eagles Dare (1968, 88% Tomatometer)

You got Richard Burton, and Clint Eastwood. I love it.

Next, Stevenson talks about working with Christopher Walken, and the possibility of a Rome movie.

And be sure to skip Mel Gibson's "Payback," an unofficial remake of "Point Blank" that wasn't nearly as good.

I disagree! "Payback" works well enough on it's own, especially the scene when the Gibson character comes back unexpectedly and shoots the bad guy on the leg and says "I forgot my cigarettes!" classic!

yet another pretentious douche with an over exaggerated sense of self-worth who can't seem to come up with more than a sentence to describe his supposed five favorite films. it's turned into the norm around here as of late.

Bullitt and Where Eagles Dare are hardly pretentious choices. Ray was probably in a hurry, but I agree these would be better if they made sure the person had time or maybe even got asked follow up questions to get at the heart of why these are their 5 favorite.

@Aaron D. Some people don't need a paragraph of description because they can articulate simple ideas to the masses with a few well chosen words. For example, if you asked me, "Why do you like Bullit?" I'd say, "Steve McQueen is THE. COOLEST. PERSON. EVER." Or, even more brief, "Two words: car chase." See, we all get it. If you want a synopsis or critical reviews of Where Eagles Dare go to IMDb, the rest of us understand that (Ricard Burton + Clint Eastwood) x war movie = Awesome.

isn't this top 5 part of an interview ? Wouldn't it be expecting an awful lot to ask the star of a current film (which he is promoting) to spend most of the interview (which is more than likely on a schedule) talking about something that has nothing to do with the movie he is promoting? I think 1 sentence answers are to be expected.

Hola Amigo

Really glad to see the Fountain on here, a very underrated movie. The effects and everything are so organic (on purpose by Aronofsky) which will probably make this a timeless sci-fi classic in the years to come. Even Aronofsky considers it his best film.
CGI and stuff certainly has its immediate entertainment value, but I often question the mileage you can get out of it. An example to me is the effects used in the Spiderman movies: though 1 & 2 were good movies the effects don't even stand up anymore and it hasn't even been 10 years.

dude everyone hates on that movie but the action scenes(tho over the top) were awesome he WAS the punisher...if there would have been better acting by the guy who played Jigsaw people would be looking at that movie a lot differently...hell since Christopher Walken is already mentioned if he would have played Jigsaw that would have been badass...at least this one told the origin properly and he fought like the Punisher actually does

I'm a HUGE fan of Garth Ennis' run on The Punisher, and I felt that Punisher: War Zone was just a flat out horrible, piece of shit of a movie. Bad acting all around, bad script, bad direction, crappy, cliched action scenes, and the movie missed the development of The Punisher seen in Ennis take on the character, the humanity put into the side characters, and the great bad guys Ennis developed. War Zone felt like a parady of the MAX titles, except it did not know that it was a joke.
