Movie Info

Running 16 minutes, Kalem's The Merry Widow consisted of highlights from the Franz Lehar opera of the same name. There was no indication on screen as to the identities of the actors, though producer Henry W. Savage managed to get his name plastered all over the film. The action was photographed "in measure" with the original music, then presented with a live orchestral accompaniment. Audiences were indifferent to this method of presentation, suggesting perhaps that they would have preferred a live production to a series of "galloping tintypes." The only time the film was visually satisfying was during the climactic presentation of the Merry Widow Waltz.more
