Movie Info

Charlie Chaplin's third film in his Mutual period is his first minor masterpiece. It combines comedy and drama in the style that Chaplin had developed in his earlier Essanay film The Tramp and anticipates later dramatic comedies such as The Kid and City Lights. Charlie plays an itinerant violinist whose famous feet we first see emerging from the swinging doors of a saloon. He takes up his position outside the back door and begins his concert, but at this moment a street band begins playing

Audience Reviews for The Vagabond, (Gipsy Life)

The latter part of this story shows Charlie Chaplin in a new role, and he handles it well in spite of the necessity of being as funny as possible.
Chaplin as of old, with a leaven of serious acting that is well done. In the role of an itinerant violinist who does some agile antics in competition with a German street band, and who follows it with a series of love misadventures in a gypsy camp.

Somewhat humorous. I find that a lot of Chaplin's earlier films were too similar to each other, and thus became pretty generic. This one kind of reminded me of his later film The Circus (which is much better than this).
