Movie Info

When a traveling Wild West show comes to town, the natives are frightened by a one-foot-tall horse that is believed to be a bad omen. The superstitious natives try to return the horse to The Valley of Gwangi to avert disaster. Tuck (James Franciscus) and T.J. (Gila Golan) try to help archaeologist Bromley (James Naismith) find the tiny equine in the valley, but they unleash a prehistoric giant monster in the process in this implausible adventure feature. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

Best thought of as one of the pictures to get out of the way later rather than sooner when you decide to see everything Ray Harryhausen did.

It says something about the production and about Harryhausen's artistry when we realize that Gwangi, the snarling dinosaur created from a tabletop model, is the most realistically alive character on the screen.

Warner Brothers' DVD edition delivers ... an excellent print and transfer (1.85:1 anamorphic). The imagery is clean and vivid, and the Dolby Digital 1.0 audio serves the rootin'-tootin' orchestral score very well.

It's painfully slow to get started, but it's a classic of sorts. I love the miniature horse the cowboys bring home, it's so cute! The stop-motion Harryhausen animation is exquisite. A real treat of a movie. The movie becomes a bit reminiscent of King Kong near the end, but it's done well.

I used to watch this as a kid! It was pretty awesome back then. I watched it again recently with my daughter. She liked the little horse. I did notice something this time that I hadn't before. The story takes place somewhere in Mexico, yet very little spanish is spoken. The announcer in the arena talks english to
