the undercurrent is jovial and playful. Not pretentious. It thinks it's unique, not self-important. It does not "insist upon itself", borrowing the words of Peter Griffin.

I agree with this. I'm a Joss Whedon fan, especially Firefly, but even when I watched this film with high expectations, I was entertained, but not that entertained by it.
The twists and turns are surprising, but it all seemed very contrived at the end.

OK, not brilliant.
