Total Recall: Body Switches

Summary

When Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds pee in a magic fountain and switch bodies during this weekend's The Change-Up, they won't just be setting up a bunch of wacky jokes about how being married with kids is different from the single life, they'll be extending a long Hollywood tradition. For decades, filmmakers have been fascinated with the possibilities of body-switching, and it's easy to see why: it's a premise that's equally useful for comedies, dramas, and sci-fi thrillers. For this week's Total Recall, we decided to take a look at some noteworthy examples, including a few from each of the genres mentioned above -- and some that aren't so easily categorized. Which are your favorites? Which movies would you add to the list? Let us know in the comments! Back to Article

Okay, so moving a person's consciousness from one body to another doesn't count as 'body switching'? Isn't that the same thing that happens in Freaky Friday?

Note that no one has mentioned hot chick (haven't seen it and won't bother, but this isn't just about good movies). Personally I think both Face/Off and especially Source Code are great. I'd like to see some comedy where a husband and wife swap bodies.

I loved Avatar and loved Face/Off even more.

Finally saw Source Code tonight. I thought it was alright (I couldn't buy in to the twist in the 3rd act) - but I don't think it should have a 91% on RT.

I don't really care either way - but by your argument of Avatar not being on the list, Source Code shouldn't be either.

Half of them shouldn't be on the list period.

Well I'm Glad you enjoyed it Noah . . . I found it to be amazingly awful when I saw it on VHS 12 years ago . . (41 percent on Rotten Tomatoes)// .. . . it was The Acting ---John Goodman was cursing at Denzel after John Goodman became possessed (really DUMB) and then Fallen had a insipid twist ending.// Everybody has their own taste in movies and food : I throw-up whenever I eat fried EGGPLANT and Corn-pudding. But Billions of People LOVE eggplant AND corn-pudding. . . . Fallen is one of my "fried-eggplant" movies. (at least I don't throw-up watching it)

The meal you described kinda makes me mentally throw up. Blech. I HIGHLY doubt "billions" of people love that meal - at least, that's not the world I want to live in.

I agree "Big" should've been mentioned, even though it's not better than Vice Versa. Tom Hanks whose supposed to have a mind of an underage touching Elizabeth Perkins breast is quite bizarre to say the least!

Yeah, cause most underage boys wouldn't touch a boob if given the chance :)

I'm surprised that "Heaven Can wait" didn't make this list. If you haven't seen it. It's a movie, starring Warren Beatty, about a man who dies in an accident and when heaven finds out that they made a mistake, they put him into a body of a wealthy old man so that he can live out his life. It's a remake however I have never seen the orinial movie, and Chris Rock did a recent remake that was horrendous. But Its a good story with heart.

* I'm not sure if this would be considered switching since one person had to die in order for him to take over his body. However, since they bent the rules for Avatar, I figured why not.
