If you were to look up the word "generic" in the dictionary, you'd see a picture of this film's poster right next to it.

From the outset, The Cold Light of Day purports to be nothing more than a by-the-numbers action thriller. What's shocking is how it manages to take this predictable-but-sturdy template and sell it short.

Bruce Willis was once our favourite wisecracking action hero. Now his movie career seems to be heading from Planet Hollywood to the dark side of Moonlighting.
| Original Score: 2/10
Relates more or less the same story as Spy Kids, though in this case the kid is in his late 20s and the spy stuff is much less believable or robust.

It all boils down to a series of riotously extended showdowns between Cavill and Weaver...
| Original Score: 2/5
The only thing shabbier than the dull, near-incomprehensible night-time cinematography is the shopworn script.

Cavill is no substitute for Van Damme, whose self-critical performance gave the earlier movie much of its heft
Simply put, "Day" is a mess Cavill never rises above.
If you are a Willis or Weaver completist then just wait until cable for this lifeless and uninspired waste.
There's the usual mixture of flying tables and chairs and various scrapes here and there while unknown director Mabrouk El Mechri tries to remember what he was supposed to be doing with the plot.
Charging $10 for this movie is criminal; vouchers and letters of apology should be handed out at the exit for those stalwart viewers who stick it out to the end.
[Weaver is] the only one having any fun - and that includes the audience.

The Cold Light of Day is an appropriately named action drama. It generates very little heat or light.
If there's anything positive to glean from Cold Light, it would have to be its use as an educational tool, teaching young film students how not to make a mid-budget action movie.

... the kind of shoddy, low-rent stinker the robots on Mystery Science Theater 3000 used to enjoy ripping to shreds.
The Cold Light of Day is a colossal mess -- and amazingly dumb.
The wait for the definitive Henry Cavill calling card movie continues.
