David Denby
This movie is grim and jammed together. The narrative isn't shaped coherently to bring out contrasts and build toward a satisfying climax. The Dark Knight is constant climax; it's always in a frenzy, and it goes on forever. [More]

Guys...clam down a bit. The review wasn't even that bad, it's just rottentomatoes forces every review to be either good or bad with no middle.

and some of his complaints aren't too out of line. I saw the movie already and the fight scenes could have been better.

Make no mistake, I loved the film and think it's one of the greatest movie going experience of my life, but I'm a comic book geek... maybe an average joe would get bored after the 2 hour mark (everything seems to tie up at the 2 hour mark, then it jsut goes on for another 30 minutes)

So, because the movie is exciting the entire time, by the time he actually wanted to be excited, he didn't notice that he was excited because he was never not excited!

I haven't seen the movie. But his the some of the things he criticizes sound like things I would like about the movie. It's clear he doesn't appreciate the genre, and there are a few critics out there who just hate comic book movies. I wasn't under any delusion that TDK would get perfect ratings across the board. It will get them from the people who matter however, and David Denby is not one of those.

Great point. Those were my thoughts exactly when I was reading this review. He's just not into violence. He's of a different time, which makes me wander why they sent him to see the movie. I don't know when people are going to realise that old people (I don't mean all old people) are obsolete in this world nowadays. They can't connect with 75% of the world today. They are a minority and I'm sorry to say it cause it is a little cruel, but old people's opinions don't matter anymore. And I'm not saying that because he gave this movie a bad rating. I'm saying it because it's a fact in life. Us young kids will be there someday to. I just hope I'm not as ignorant as some of these old timers now.

I don't think a constant climax is a bad thing. Isn't that kind of what a good action movie is about? I don't know if he should be a top critic. He seems to disagree with the tomato meter a lot.

I wish I could be in a constant climax, normally I only last a few seconds.

Poor guy, the movie almost gave him a heart attack. Here's some advice Mr. Denby: Go pop that industrial sized bottle of Tums that we all know, keep with you at all times, and watch the movie again. It's not their fault you cant handle a movie that's got you constantly on edge.

My God... he liked Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and hated The Bucket List and The Dark Knight??? This guy is pretty messed in his head. I´m glad he has nothing to do with the Oscars, WALL-E could win best actor and give Batman & Robin Best movie and director.

i find it amusing that so many people who haven't seen the movie yet are trashing this guy's review. see the movie first you dimwitted simpletons...then again when you're at this level of fanboyism, it doesn't matter how good or bad the movie is, you'll still think it's awesome

I really hope Denby is wrong about the fight scenes being filmed too close-up and jerky, because that was my one big complaint with BATMAN BEGINS.
Well, that and Katie Holmes' acting.

I just read over the entire review and I found more than a few problems.

First: Batman doesn't fight in broad daylight. The idea is that you don't see him, you just hit the ground. Of course, that still means that fight scenes would'nt be enjoyable if you couldn't see anything, but I for one would be angry if I could see every move. It just wouldn't be Batman.

Second: You're mad that this isn't like Burton's '89 Batman? THAT'S THE IDEA. It's not supposed to be fun and campy. It's supposed to be early Batman. Dark, sinister and grim. Jesus. These are just basic facts, did you actually read anything about the movie before you saw it? Because if you didn't (you didn't) you should go into the theater with no bias.

Third: You said Bale is monotone as Batman. Sorry, wasn't aware that Batman is supposed to be happy. Different tones are used to express different emotions. Batman's only emotion is depressed "I-will-kick-the-****-out-of-you."

Fourth: Constant climax? That's a damn good thing, because then we know we won't have to deal with crappy side story about Wayne's relationship with Dawes. That kind of stuff ruined countless other movies.

Fifth: You're mad because Two-face didn't get more screen time. You know what ruined Spiderman 3? TOO MANY VILLAINS. They're making sure to ration the number of villains they put int he movie. That's good, remember?

I love how many people have already commented on this review only after it being posted a short time. I've been reading all these comments and they are hilarious! You fanboys are funny bastards when your pissed off.

But, calm down and read the article again. He really didn't say anything that bad about it. All the minor negative things he's said about this movie was said by all the other critics that gave this movie a good rating.

What the hell. You're all a bunch of insane fanboys. Seriously, let this guy have an opinion. You're not really in any place to disagree when you haven't seen the movie yet. And even if you did see it, insulting people who disagree with you makes you look like a real idiot. He said what his complaints were. He didn't like the movie. It's his opinion, and even unpopular opinions should be on this site. Also, it takes negative reviews to bring people back down into reality. This movie isn't going to be some flawless masterpiece. Batman Begins had quite a few issues even though, overall, it was probably the best Batman movie. It's going to be the same with TDK. It's going to be a good movie and it's also going to have its fair share of flaws. Some of these flaws will ruin the movie for some people but not for others(just like Batman Begins). Death threats are not called for here.
