The generation of consumers who swallow this pessimistic sentiment can't see past the product to its debased morality. Instead, their excitement about The Dark Knight's dread (that teenage thrall with subversion) inspires their fealty to product.
So technically speaking, if we don't count the reviews from NY, which are predominantly rotten and rather conspicuously biased, then this film would sit on around 98%, pretty darn good. Consider that and Top Critics would be around 96% or so, and you have the best rated comic book film to date (sorry Spidey 2, who is on 95% Top Critics).

What??? You don't know the great Nolan!
I directed TDK Man!
Ohhhhhh! That Nolan?
Yes! Now open the door!
(Batman opens the door)
OMG! What are doing here Batman?
Hiding in the dark, you prickk. You set all those fuccking dogs on me at the end of the movie. Not cool, man!
Hmmm! Sorry dude...but why so edgy in opening the door?
Oh that! I thought my momma and sis came back to ask me for money!
Actually, Batman, I could use a couple of bucks myself.
(BIFF! BANG!! THUD! OWWWW! THUD!!)
See ya Batty! You really should work on those fighting moves....and take some damm Alleve....you fight like you got arthritis.
(Nolan leaves....leaving Batman groaning on the floor of the motel room)
(To be continued.....)

Oh Armonnnnnnddd.... *sigh*Why live your life in so much with so much tension and pretense? Relax, take a deep breath, and do all of us a favor by dropping that freaking thesaurus. After all... Your job is safe with the NY Press! Racism made an exit a lot quicker than affirmative action ever will.

I am far from sure why you dislike this movie. Just because you use big words and dig for meanings of which to spit in the face of the film, leaves me feeling that you are mainly judging it based off of your ignorance and poor outlook on todays movie goer. You sadden me. Extremely.
Aug 1 - 08:30 PM
psychobabble? psychobabble Armond? Are you serious? You aren't reviewing an indie art flick...you are reviewing BATMAN. Next time try to use vernacular that actually applies to the type of movie you are watching...not all vernacular applies to all genres

that's funny, man, really funny.
5/5 comedic review
Aug 2 - 01:55 PM
I don't share Mr. White's puritanical qualms about The Dark Knight's "debased morality." I just think that it sucks outright. It was a banal bore of a movie targeted to the easily amused tastes of the same people who have made "American Idol" the most popular television show in history.
Aug 3 - 04:26 PM
psterrett:if you found The Dark Knight "a bore of a movie", go back to your Merchant Ivory productions and lick out the rest of your 7-month-old Grey Poupon.

Any stray from this critics personal concept of what something "is" and "should be" has somehow convinced him he has warrant to asinine assertions and rights to counter opinions with lackluster and ill researched reason.
Aug 5 - 12:40 PM
How unsurprising that this review has the most comments. Any time a reviewer rightfully calls teenagers out on being stupid, the teenagers flock en masse to prove their point under the delusion that they are disproving it.
Aug 5 - 03:59 PM
You're an idiot. Obviously not only teenagers disagree with this hack. Get real. Anyone who doesn't think The Dark Knight is at the very least a good movie, probably has zero taste.
Aug 5 - 10:35 PM
I was going to bash this review due to the fact that half of it is actually in judgement of the people who like this movie. Then I saw that he used the word "quadrangle" in his review and realized Mr. White is doing a damn good job of making himself look like a snobby know-it-all. He doesn't need my help.

These dang kids and their dang subversion...
Oh wait... this version of the Batman myth has been around since 1986.
Which would make these dang kids the same age as you, Mr White.
Peoples' faith in black and white morality died in the late 70s, when they began realising that jingoism and nationalistic chest-beating were creating problems, not solving them.
Their faith in 'just trust me, I'm different' leadership died a decade later when they realised that their politicians were still peddling the same Cold War platitudes because they had nothing else to push.
The Dark Knight myth is a reaction to that. It's a fantasy exploring the darker side of democracy... self-interest masquerading as community.
The sort of James Bond film you want to see is a 1950s Jet-Setter's invention: that you can be wealthy, handsome, virile, adventuresome and materialistic yet some how morally incorruptible.
The Dark Knight sends a very different message, and one that resonates: that there are people who /do/ good, and then there are people who steal the credit.
With its predecessors contaminated by Bondisms, Nolan's is the first film in the franchise to unflinchingly nail the Dark Knight myth.
If you want to see the positive moral message, watch carefully what happens on the ferries again. It says it clearly: it's not politicians, but ordinary people acting decent that creates decent societies.

Sorry dude, do your research before you write up dumb stuff. The graphic novel series is based on Gotham as being dark toned. Pessimism is the theme that makes Gotham the type of city that needs a hero to keep it afloat as in Batman. That's why he's there. Check out, Batman Returns. That was pretty dark also. Christopher Nolan isn't being pessimistic when he made this one. They've all been this way. Open your eyes. Rotten equates to crap, Fresh means overall good, this isn't a review on perfection just on the majority of postive / negative. Wish more people would judge movies based on that.
Aug 16 - 03:44 AM
Strange, because I find that Ledger's joker is very "multileveled", definetly not one-dimensional.
Aug 19 - 02:27 PM
yup all of us over here in NY are spidey people. Batman?!?! No way! it must be terrible cause spideys not in it!
Aug 23 - 02:32 PM
Excellent review, and as other posters have commented it is nothing short of hilarious the amount of teenage fanbois rushing in here to defend their poorly made film of the moment. The critic is correct, you cannot explain complex moral viewpoints like this one to teenagers. Teenagers have poor judgement, it can only improve with age.
Aug 31 - 09:37 AM
it's simple, gentlemen...he's a deeply repressed comic book fan in his childhood years and actually loves the movie deep down inside, but he's too far deep in other movie companies' pockets to give an honest review. the douche.

Ole Mattis Opperud
You are one of the most condescending, underestimating, smug reviewers I have ever seen. You are seriously underestimating the intelligence of movie audiences. You even act as if you're the only one who can "see through" a movie which has almost been universally praised. I suppose you're one of the gifted and wise few, then? Get over yourself, you pretentious fart.
Sep 14 - 01:51 PM
Hey, all you New York critics out there, stop comparing Nolan's work to Burton's. TDK Rocks. Armond White, you suck.
