WB offers DVD to Blu-ray Trade-In Program

Learn how you can upgrade your WB DVDs to Blu-ray

There's no denying that the Blu-ray format is vastly superior to DVD, but what if you've spent the last decade building up a substantial DVD library? Now that HD DVD is finally dead, you can safely embrace this new format, but do you really want to have to buy all of those movies again?

The good news is that the fine folks at WB feel your pain, and so they've launched a nifty trade-in program that will help you out. For as low as $7.95 per disc, DVD owners can send in their eligible Warner discs and replace it with a new, hi-def Blu-ray version. For complete details on this offer is available at http://www.dvd2blu.com/.

Are you a collector that will take advantage of this offer? Let us know in the comments below and find more on Blu-ray in RT's Blu-ray headquarters!

Good, but I already own some of them on blu-ray. I wish they included more of their library than just a few.

I am confused. It says to only mail the DVD and no cases so does that mean you only get the blu-ray discs and not the cases?

If I had a Blu-ray player and if I had any of those DVD's, I'd trade up. Maybe by the time I do get a Blu-ray player they'll be offering to trade in some movies that I own.

by the time i get a blu- ray player a new movie player will be out lol besides my 360 up-converts dvds so its still really great quality on my t.v.

Seth, NOT EVEN CLOSE.

Go to Blockbuster and rent out a BD movie. PS3 & 360 play BD, don't they?
Not sure, I have a beast of a computer so I see no point of paying $300 for an inferior machine, but if it does, and if you have an HD TV, you will see a pretty significant difference. Especially if you have 7.1 DTS.

Hey Watcher, I got a Sony Blu-ray player for 150. And your PC ain't got a 40 inch screen does it? (=

Seth, nothing on the 360 even remotely compares to blu-ray. Just letting you know.

probably not worth 8 bucks a pop for me to replace them, but I'm cheap. I'll just go from here.

Rockslide

Rockslide on 11-24-2009 06:28 PM

Not even worth that money. Sorry, but I have to agree with Seth, the up-converters on the 360 and the PS3 are pretty incredible. I know its not the same level as popping in a Blu-Ray but its certainly good enough to negate buying the same movie yet again. They really need to drop the price on old and new Blu-Rays if they want people to switch. They need to cost the same as the dvds, then it would be a no-brainer and facilitate a quick switch over. I was surprised when Wal-Mart had Transformers 2 the same price for the dvd as the blu-ray. We need more of that.

runmong

runmong on 11-24-2009 11:07 PM

Totally disagree Rockslide. I've upgraded a number of my dvds, and while some aren't huge up grades, other films look INCREDIBLE on blu-ray. A good example would be Children of Men, I recently traded in my dvd for a blu ray and it was like watching a whole new movie. I couldn't believe how amazing it looked.

I'm with poster August M. I've already got the BRay versions of the movies I like. Hopefully, this will be an on-going program so I can up-grade other DVDs I own as the BRay versions become available.

I have two WB movies that would be worth the upgrade BUT both are not eligible for a trade in! Haha! What a joke!

It's a good idea overall but I didn't pay $7.95 for one of those dvd's listed and considering most of them are from the bargin bin, the upconvert on the PS3 is more than sufficient.

this is great i own most of those on dvd anyway so a blu ray upgrade for that much is for me

Its called "How to still do business when nobody has any money--"

things will get back to normal--eventually the economy "corrects itself" . . . eventually.

everybody's got me "spooked" about the earthquakes predicted to occur in 2011 and 2012 . . .

If the Apocalypse doesn't happen, people will have money again.

"The masses" over-spent and things have to have time to "catch-up"

Its like over-eating, eventually you feel better.

Its just "those" earthquake predictions.
We keep on flowing though--can't stop for fear of 2011 and 2012 earthquakes.

Too many different civilizations talked about 2011 and 2012 specifically mentioning each year though.

For older movies, studios are barely putting anything into BD transfers. They look like their DVD counterparts. Probably most of these WB movies fall into that category. Just a waste of money.

False.

I think one thing a lot of people aren't realizing with this "deal" is that 95% of the movies on the list are under $10 on blu-ray anyway. So you really aren't saving anything by doing this and may as well just keep the dvd and buy the blu-ray. (By the way, when I say under $10, I'm referring to their price on Amazon.)

Bull ****. I'm not paying 8 bucks for bluray copies of what i already bought. The same movie i only watch once or twice a year? nope

scifimark

scifimark on 11-25-2009 03:22 PM

Im an avid blu-ray watcher and it really depends on the movie and how the studio converts it. The dark knight and star trek look awesome on blu-ray but we were soldiers looks like garbage and is barely better than the original dvd. And its not necessarily because of how old the movie is becaus i have blazing saddles in blu-ray and i couldnt believe how good it looked

ColinTheCimmerian

ColinTheCimmerian on 11-25-2009 06:37 PM

Good point scifimark.

I think as Blu Ray becomes more widespread we'll see its quality (at least on cheaper, more obscure titles) go down. Like scifimark's example illustrates, older movies that weren't shot on high-tech digital cameras can't just magically become high def; there's some serious restoration and enhancement that has to happen to make a 30 year old movie look and sound as good as one that was made last year. Studios will invest money into doing that for major titles and Special Editions and the like, but they might not take so much care when making a Blu Ray for something on the obscure side that they plan on selling for 10 bucks. The same thing happened with DVD; the new releases and the popular older movies looked excellent (compared to VHS), with anamorphic transfers and full remastering (where applicable). But the cheaper movies, like the 4-packs of Chuck Norris or Steven Seagal movies, had the same old fullscreen presentations with mediocre sound and image quality as the VHS copies did. In many cases there probably wasnt any 'conversion' to speak of, it was the same version of the movie just put on a different medium. Blu Ray as a technology has the potential to look WAY better than DVD, but not every Blu Ray release will necessarily live up to that potential.
