am i the only person that thought a better (though admittedly sadder) ending would have just let bruce die? or at the very least, they should have moved the scene w/ alfred and bruce and selena to after the credits, as a bonus scene?

The film is purposedly very allegorical. If you realize what Nolan's obvious intentions were from the first film, Alfred would guide Bruce through overcoming his nightmares. The fact that he isn't ready to let Batman (himself merely a task that was committed to a mission in TDK that effectively worked) it's because he hasn't fully embraced his real persona because of the more relevance he gave to that fictional and strategical persona based on his fears. When you see him dying, THAT was Batman, wheras Wayne was only being born.

i really thought the best scene was when alfred is talking to the wayane graves about how he was sorry, but in the next scene nods to bruce across the table in France. when that happened i let go the biggest sigh of relief ever !
