Nice job. I respect the action you have taken and the integrity you show in writing this article.

I think everyone is being inane on this debate; RT, dumb fanboys and all the wannabe John Lovitz critics(Male and Female). RT is trying to play the nice grandma role in telling everyone to "be nice" and "play fair", dumb fanboys are like the drunk uncle you can't shutup once he's loaded, and all these "critics" if you can call them that(honestly don't think half of them know how movies are actually made)are like that bitter aunt who just got divorced and is just joyless and miserable to everyone and everything.

I detest Facebook and do not have an account, either. I will not participate in a site that requires me to obtain one.
Also, I understand it is easy to create a phony account under a bogus name (something I also would not do), so how does that solve for the problem of anonymity?

Actually, he *had* made a habit out of this. He did the same thing when The Dark Knight came out.

Yep, doing something one other time four years ago equals a habit.
Also, dragging up a nine year old incident is pretty low. Heaven forbid people be allowed to learn from their mistakes and have them stay in the past. The fact that this current "error of judgement" is no where near as severe as what he did back in 2003 makes what you did even worse. They don't compare. One was a breach of journalistic integrity; this was a practical joke.
What cracks me up is the fact that you suddenly take your website seriously. This comments thing has been a problem for years, and Snider has been a very vocal critic of it. You kept Armond White in the Tomatometer for years, and I suspect it's because of the traffic it drove to your site thanks to commentors just itching to bad-mouth him. You turned the other cheek, and for YEARS, ugly nasty things have been said towards critics with very little being done. Until someone made you look like a fool (again), by gaming your system with a fake review (again, with pretty much the same blurb). I can almost guarantee had Snider written a fake positive review, you wouldn't have minded. You wouldn't have batted an eyelash. But he made you look stupid. Satire is officially dead.
Here's what you ACTUALLY need to do: Kill the comments system. Have some guts of your own to assume people will come to your site no matter if they have the ability to piss all over a critic for having a difference of opinion. Why? Because that's how this site worked for years, and it worked just fine.
Also, this "We demand to be taken seriously!" and then asking people to not be "dicks" is just about the most opposite path to being taken seriously I have ever seen.

I agree, let the guy back in with a warning that if he ever does something like this again he's gone. Banning him from RT could destroy his career, have some heart. movies aren't supposed to be so political.

No, Snider knowing posted a review link to something that wasn't a review, after we specifically asked him not to do that in the past. And he dragged Film.com into it by linking attributing the review to their site.

I'd already devoted most of my staff yesterday to policing comments, and we would probably have ended up killing the comments anyway.

If Snider isn't going to take his reputation as a critic seriously, why should we?

That is just sad that the comments had to be disabled. I just hope that facebook comments stay allowed. Don't delete that option just because the Nolanites go overboard sometimes IMO.

having the film a 84% doesn't feel right at all, if the film falls into 70s i will then be extremely disappointed. Films rarely go up 10% on RT, usually they gradually go the other way around.

Yeah your right, but I still think that it will end with a 95% rating. There is still 200+ reviews yet to come in.

There arent enough reviews to really tell. However the overall rating is 8.8 which is really high. ALot of films that finish in the 90 tm score dont usually have that high of a rating

There are plenty of other things to get angry about, like war, famine, poverty and crime. But not movie reviews.

How is that well said its such a cop out. If there are other things to worry about then close down this site and start a non-profit web site dealing with poverty or crime.

Couldn't agree more. I have a friend from England who now lives here in the US & I asked him about any difficult cultural transitions he'd faced moving from there to here. His first response, without hesitation, was about how PERSONALLY USAmericans take things, especially on the level of personal opinions/perspectives. As a culture, we have come to associate our OPINIONS & IDEAS with our IDENTITY & cannot handle someone disagreeing with us, or with our individual perspectives. It betrays our lack of cultural character & maturity & this post is a reasonable challenge to that cultural immaturity.

There are innumerably more important issues to get worked up over...critical unanimity over a movie - a MOVIE (which I'm admittedly more excited to see than I can describe) - shouldn't be such a priority & should never be the source of such personal, vitriolic dialogue (especially if you haven't even seen it yet!)

Thanks for the great post Matt...great stuff.

This is historical!!! Death threats and angry fan boys!! Its sad RT had to step in, also it is funny what Snider did, but again not professional. Reading these posts are making my Tuesday morning!! I will be at the midnight show no matter what, I have been let down before, ex: Star Wars: Phantom Menace, and Spidey 3, which was fine for the most part. I just love how people get so worked up!! But death threats and words of hate over a movie, come on these guys make millions of dollars, I am sure Nolan and them could careless about the negative reviews. Also if you read the articles, it was simply a matter of taste, some miss Heath overs didn't like the direction of an almost three hr film....anyways enjoy the movie and relax!!!!

Facebook is hardly tied to someone's real identity...You can use an alias..it's not like you need to submit bank details and address info..

I don't agree with policing hate speech, it is too ambiguous...and eventually whoeever is doing the policing, their personality has too much influence over the forum...

I say let everything pass, unless it is a direct death threat
