Cooper is great, in a great part. But for an actor, not for his audience.

Like most films that try and sustain a breakneck pacing and tone, The Devil's Double eventually grows tiresome.

A tedious exercise in obsessively black and white storytelling.

The elements of tyranny, treachery and temptation are all there in one true-life package, but in the hands of director Lee Tamahori, The Devil's Double plays more like a melodrama than a docudrama.

I don't think the material ever becomes more than just a series of terrible things that happen.

Tamahori tries to top off this already long Arab immorality tale with gratuitous swirls of romance and heroism.

Dominic Cooper gives a riveting dual performance in "The Devil's Double," but the movie is a relentless one-note drama that loses its momentum halfway through.

It's sad that the film could not live up to Dominic Cooper's epic performance(s). The flick had such a made-for-TV feel containing massive plot holes and a cheesy romance.

I believe Tamahori is attempting to construct his own Scarface legacy, though I shudder at the thought of Uday being transformed into an urban hero.

Really it's just a trashy bid to be the "Scarface" of Mesopotamia.

Even more tasteless than its main character's gold 'n' marble palace.

It leaves me to wonder if this one-sided movie will be where the widest audience gets their history of Iraq and its various conflicts, and if so, that's sad.

You leave Lee Tamahori's film thoroughly convinced that Uday Hussein was a monster. In all likelihood, you entered the movie with the same certainty. This raises the question: What was the point, exactly?

Lee Tamahori opts to swim in the shallow waters of gaudy exploitation rather than explore some of the deeper issues of the politics of power.

Presents its relationships without convincing depth and threatens to become just another flashy, occasionally nasty tale of drugs, guns, henchmen and babes in bikinis.

Could play on a double-bill alongside Hobo With A Shotgun about iron fist dictators with a pair of psychotic sons who shoot first and laugh just as quickly. You might have trouble deciphering which is supposed to be the ironic one though.
