For the most part, the movie's rhythms feel slightly off -- there are long stretches without a laugh -- and there is a mean-spirited air to the whole thing.

Being from Arizona, I'm sure you're well qualified to judge "mean-spirited". The reason there were long stretches without a laugh is because the script never called for Aladeen to present his birth certificate and there were no illegal aliens being picked off from a helicopter.
